In the first US Presidential debate, President Donald Trump and former Vice-President Joe Biden clashed on a host of different of different issues and regularly resorted to cheap insults. The debate has already been dubbed “an embarrassment to America”.

The first debate took place at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland with Trump trying to close the polling gap on his opponent with five weeks left until the election on November 3rd.

Upon being interrogated by Biden about right-wing white supremacist violence, Trump replied “somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not right-wing problem. This is a left wing problem.” Antifa has been a major player in the American political scene since the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police sparked another wave of Black Lives Matter protests. There have been riots across the US with practically entire cities being burned to the ground, almost all of which are run by the Democrats.

Speaking further on the point, Trump said “You don’t want to say anything about law and order, you’re afraid to even say it.” Later elaborating that it would put Biden at odds with the many radicals within his party.

Biden himself did not hold back on hurling insults at Trump by calling him a “clown”, a liar, a racist and “the worst president America has ever had”. He also pressed the president on his taxes which were reported to be only $750 for 2016 and 2017, a claim which Trump refutes, saying that he has paid many millions in tax and that all Americans are entitled to tax deductions. Biden also called Trump “Putin’s puppy”, a claim which runs contrary to his tax jibes given that the President’s released financial information showed no collusion with the Russians.

When it comes to financial backing from foreign governments, Trump was quick to point out that Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has been in close contact with foreign officials, an allegation which Joe Biden denies. Trump also targeted Hunter for his cocaine addiction although his opponent said that he was proud of his son for managing to overcome these issues.

The President also boasted “in 47 months, I’ve done more than you’ve done in 47 years.”

It was a chaotic debate full of interruptions and the moderator had to interject: “The country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions, I’m appealing to you, sir, to do it.” This was an appeal to Trump. Biden later made a significantly less diplomatic statement to Trump when he said “shut up man.”

Trump questioned the moderator’s neutrality saying “And him, too?” whilst nodding towards Mr Biden. “Well, frankly, you’ve been doing more interrupting.” replied moderator, Chris Wallace.
