Explore the Highlights of the 2026 Foyle Maritime Festival in Derry

The Foyle Maritime Festival is set to transform Derry’s riverfront into a vibrant hub of maritime magic from June 25 to June 28, 2026. Under the theme ‘Forged by the Foyle: It’s in Our DNA’ this year’s festival promises an unforgettable experience with a lineup of spectacular ships, live music, and family-friendly activities.

Originally launched in 2012 as a backdrop for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the festival has evolved into a beloved Derry tradition. Despite the race organizers’ decision not to include Derry in 2026, the local council’s commitment to the festivities has attracted record crowds, and 2026 looks set to continue this trend.

The Star Attractions: Tall Ships and Historic Vessels

The centerpiece of this year’s festival is the Galeón Andalucía a 55-meter, six-deck replica of a Spanish galleon making its Northern Ireland debut. This magnificent vessel is the only full-scale sailing ship of its kind in the world, offering visitors a glimpse into the age of exploration.

Joining the Galeón Andalucía are several other notable vessels, including the The Phoenix known for its cannon salutes, and the classic Danish schooner built in 1932. The French Navy’s Mutin a former WWII spy vessel, and the Eabora converted to sail by novelist Alistair MacLean, add to the historic lineup. The restored 1936 Danish fishing boat Klevia completes the impressive fleet.

Circus, Theatre, and Vintage Fun

The festival brings a carnival atmosphere to The Dock with the Carnival of Colours featuring four days of street theatre and circus performances. Visitors can enjoy acrobatics, juggling, comedy walkabouts, and face painting from talented performers like Hikapee, Tumble Circus, and Fraser Hooper. Family shows such as Up the Foyle in a Bubble and Everywhere’s a Beach run throughout the festival.

A vintage funfair, complete with the Amelia Earhart Wheel, offers sweeping river views and a nostalgic seaside experience. The funfair is a perfect blend of classic attractions and modern entertainment, providing a delightful backdrop to the festival’s activities.

Marine Discovery and Hands-On Science

The Loughs Agency Marine Machines and VR Experience allows visitors to meet live sea creatures and explore underwater worlds with VR headsets. FUSE Arts’ The Science of Water delivers STEAM activities and environmental workshops, while the DNA Museum festival zone brings local heritage to life in advance of the official opening of the new Derry North Atlantic Museum in Ebrington in spring.

The festival also features the The Edge Wakeboarding Team returning with daily aerial stunt displays. The Loughs Agency runs inclusive taster sessions and boat tours from the South Pontoon, offering a range of activities for all ages and abilities.

Live Music, Food, and Markets

The Rockshore Sounds stage hosts a diverse lineup of local and national musicians, including Altan, George Houston, We Love Sax, John Deery & The Heads, and Reevah. The Legenderry Food Village and Maritime Markets serve a variety of local and continental fare, with reduced-price children’s meals available at vendors.

From Thursday to Saturday, the Sails of Solace Light Show transforms the tall ships into an illuminated riverscape, featuring ghostly installations of Dopey Dick and seals. On Sunday at 10:25pm, the NI Rock Choir performs a Dusk Chorus from The Dock, leading into a synchronised fireworks display over the river at 11pm.

Plan your visit with free parking at Fort George and accessible parking at Strand Road car park. The festival runs daily from 12 noon to 11pm, with the weather forecast promising a mix of sunshine and light rain throughout the weekend.
