The UK is facing a concerning rise in norovirus infections, prompting health officials to issue an urgent call to action. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported an “exceptionally high” number of cases, highlighting the need for public awareness and preventive measures.

Current state of norovirus infections

During a recent briefing, the UKHSA shared alarming data regarding norovirus, a highly contagious virus known for causing severe gastrointestinal illness. Between January 20 and February 2, there was a staggering 17.4% increase in reported cases compared to the previous two weeks.

This surge has resulted in a total case count that is 116.7% above the five-season average for this time of year.

Particularly vulnerable are individuals aged 65 and older, who are experiencing a significant impact from the outbreak. Hospital outbreaks have also risen by 22.6% compared to the five-season average, raising concerns among healthcare professionals.

Factors contributing to the rise

The UKHSA has indicated that the increase in reported cases may be partially due to enhanced testing capabilities, including the use of PCR multiplex technology, which can identify multiple gastrointestinal pathogens in a single test. However, the emergence of a new norovirus genotype, GII.17, alongside changes in epidemiological patterns following the COVID-19 pandemic, are likely contributing factors to the current outbreak.

Dr. Gauri Godbole, deputy director of the UKHSA, emphasized the importance of public health measures during this critical time. She noted that while the half-term break may provide a temporary reduction in cases, it is essential for individuals to take precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.

Public health recommendations

In light of the rising cases, health officials are urging the public to adhere to strict hygiene practices. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting are advised to stay home and avoid contact with others, particularly in hospitals and care homes, to prevent transmission in these vulnerable settings.

Furthermore, it is crucial to refrain from returning to work, school, or childcare facilities until at least 48 hours after symptoms have ceased. During this time, individuals should also avoid preparing food for others, as the virus can still be transmitted even after symptoms have resolved.

To combat the spread of norovirus, health authorities recommend thorough handwashing with soap and warm water, as well as using bleach-based cleaning products on surfaces. It is important to note that alcohol-based hand sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus, so reliance on these products alone is not advisable.

As the situation continues to evolve, the UKHSA is closely monitoring the outbreak and encourages the public to remain vigilant and proactive in their health practices. By following these guidelines, individuals can help mitigate the impact of this highly infectious virus.
