Introduction to HSBC UK’s financial health check service

HSBC UK is taking a significant step towards enhancing financial wellness by introducing a “financial health check” service in its branches. This initiative builds on the success of a previous telephone service that provided personalized guidance to over 11,000 customers and non-customers.

The bank plans to roll out this face-to-face service to more than 100 branches shortly, with further expansion anticipated in the coming months.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on financial awareness

Launched in 2016, the financial health check service has gained popularity, particularly in response to the financial challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The crisis prompted many individuals to reassess their financial situations, leading to an increased demand for support. Starting from March 3, HSBC UK invites both account holders and the general public to schedule in-person consultations with trained branch representatives.

These 30-minute discussions focus on various aspects of financial wellness, including spending habits, savings goals, and lending options.

Comprehensive support for financial wellness

In addition to the financial health checks, HSBC UK promotes several other initiatives aimed at improving financial literacy and security. These include wellbeing webinars, unclaimed benefit checks, and a digital tool for assessing one’s financial fitness score. Sally Williams, who oversees HSBC UK’s branches, emphasized the importance of financial wellbeing, stating, “It is often understated or not talked about, but is such an important part of our lives.” She noted that the pandemic highlighted the need for individuals to take control of their finances, whether out of necessity or a desire for improvement.

Personalized financial guidance for unique journeys

HSBC UK’s financial health checks are designed to cater to the unique financial journeys of individuals. The service provides a supportive environment for customers to discuss their financial concerns and develop tailored plans to achieve their goals. Williams likened the financial health check to a medical check-up, stating that it can help identify areas needing attention while also fostering a solid foundation for a stronger financial future. Importantly, these resources are available to everyone, not just HSBC UK customers.

Success stories from the financial health check service

A notable success story comes from a 27-year-old client who, after participating in an HSBC UK Financial HealthCheck, discovered he had accumulated debts totaling £18,000. He described his situation as being “in a bad place” but was provided with valuable options for managing his debt. The client also received advice to communicate openly with his partner about his financial struggles, which ultimately led to a supportive partnership. He has since paid off his debt and looks forward to regular meetings with the bank to discuss his financial progress.
