In a significant escalation, counter-terrorism police have arrested five activists associated with Palestine Action, signaling a tough stance against pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Topics covered
In a series of coordinated dawn raids, counter-terrorism police have arrested five individuals linked to Palestine Action, an activist group advocating for Palestinian rights. The arrests unfolded on Tuesday morning across various locations in the UK, part of a proactive investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Details of the Arrests
So, who were those arrested? The group consists of three men and two women, aged between 26 and 61. They were taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into activities associated with the proscribed group Palestine Action.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that two men, aged 26 and 55, were arrested in South London, while a 61-year-old woman was detained in East London. Additional arrests included a 48-year-old woman in Kendal, Cumbria, and a 39-year-old man in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
This crackdown comes just as the activist group Defend Our Juries has announced plans for a mass protest in Parliament Square on September 6. Expecting over 1,000 people to gather, the protest aims to voice strong opposition to the recent actions against Palestine Action. Participants will carry signs proclaiming their support for the cause, showing resilience despite the ongoing police actions.
Background on Palestine Action and Recent Protests
Palestine Action has faced increasing scrutiny and legal challenges this summer, with more than 700 individuals arrested and 114 charged in relation to their demonstrations. Supporters, including prominent figures like Tim Crosland and law student Paddy Friend, have been actively organizing events to raise awareness about the situation in Palestine. It’s worth noting that Paddy Friend was reportedly providing legal advice to fellow activists via a Zoom call just before the arrests took place.
Chief Superintendent Helen Flanagan of the Counter Terrorism Command shared, “These arrests have been made as part of an ongoing investigation into people we suspect have been involved in encouraging support for the proscribed group Palestine Action.” She made it clear that while many express their views through peaceful protests, supporting a proscribed organization carries serious legal risks.
Reactions to the Arrests
The arrests have ignited outrage among activist groups. Defend Our Juries described the detentions as a significant infringement on free speech. A spokesperson stated, “Locking up our key spokespeople just hours before they were due to hold a press conference constitutes an unprecedented assault on free speech in our country.”
Kerry Moscogiuri, director of campaigns and communications at Amnesty International UK, echoed this sentiment, calling the arrests “incredibly concerning.” Moscogiuri urged for the immediate release of those detained, emphasizing that organized, peaceful protests are protected under international human rights law.
As preparations for the planned protest continue, activists remain steadfast in their resolve. They insist that the mass action will go ahead, regardless of the crackdown. The message from organizers resonates loud and clear: “The mass defiance of the unjust ban on Palestine Action is unstoppable.”
