Nadiya Bychkova shares details of a frightening fall that nearly ended her dance career.

Topics covered
Nadiya Bychkova, a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, experienced a significant incident last month during rehearsals. A serious fall raised concerns about her dance career and resulted in her hospitalization. Bychkova, 36, has since shared details about the traumatic moments following the accident.
The Incident: A Moment of Panic
The fall occurred while Bychkova was rehearsing for a group dance. “It was a really scary moment,” she recounted. “I was up on a chair and table in heels, and the next thing I knew, I was on my back in pain, unable to feel my left leg or move.” Following the incident, she was quickly transported to a hospital via ambulance, where medical staff immobilized and closely monitored her condition.
A photograph taken shortly after the fall shows Bychkova restrained with her head secured, underscoring the severity of the situation. She described her experience on the hospital trolley: “I was strapped to a trolley for hours, told not to move while we waited for a scan.
That’s when you worry because you have no idea how bad it is. I thought it might be the end of my series or even my dancing career.” The fear of potential spinal damage loomed large as she awaited her scan results.
Relief and Recovery
Fortunately, the results were positive; there was no permanent damage. “When I was told there was no permanent damage, it was the biggest relief of my life,” she said. Remarkably, Bychkova returned to work in time for the upcoming BBC series. She recently appeared at the premiere of the latest Downton Abbey film, looking radiant despite her recent ordeal.
Reflecting on her recovery, Nadiya acknowledged the support of her fellow dancers and the medical team. “The Strictly crew were absolutely amazing. The medical team kept me stable and warm while we waited for the ambulance,” she stated. Co-dancer Carlos Gu attempted to uplift her spirits with music, although his choice of songs initially left her in tears rather than laughter.
Looking Ahead: Back to Dance and New Challenges
Currently, Nadiya feels better than ever and is eager to compete. “I’m OK. Feeling better than ever. Fighting fit and ready for an amazing series,” she expressed. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding the show, including claims of substance abuse and intimidation, Nadiya remains focused on delivering her best performance. “We are all focused on doing the best job possible. I am always thankful to be part of the biggest show on telly, and this is my ninth year,” she noted.
As the new season approaches, excitement builds regarding Nadiya’s partnership. Last year, she faced early elimination with swimmer Tom Dean but achieved a notable fifth place with journalist Dan Walker in 2021. This season features a mix of celebrities, including YouTube star George Clarke and EastEnders’ Balvinder Sopal, along with new professional dancers from abroad.
UPDATE AT 10:15 – While details of her partnership remain undisclosed, Nadiya is determined to make this season memorable. “I would love to make it a decade next year, but my focus for the next few months is making the 2025 edition the best one yet,” she declared, showcasing her determination and resilience.
