OVO Energy Launches Winter Support Initiative for Struggling Households

OVO Energy Enhances Support for Struggling Households with Essential Winter Energy Assistance Programs

This winter, many households across the UK face significant challenges in affording their energy bills. In response, OVO Energy has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at providing essential support to those in need. With a commitment of £56 million through its Extra Support Package, OVO Energy seeks to alleviate the pressure on vulnerable families as they navigate the cold months ahead.

The increase in energy prices has raised concerns among many, with recent announcements indicating that the average household energy bill will rise by £35 annually, bringing it to £1,775. In light of these developments, OVO Energy is intensifying its efforts to ensure that no one is left behind.

Details of the support package

Households qualifying for assistance will have access to a variety of free energy-saving products, including electric blankets, smart sockets, and comprehensive home efficiency kits. Additionally, OVO Energy plans to offer significant upgrades such as new boilers and heat pumps to enhance energy efficiency.

Financial assistance options

In addition to physical products, OVO Energy will provide several financial relief options. Customers can expect reductions in their direct debit payments, emergency credit top-ups, and extended repayment plans. This multifaceted approach aims to help customers manage their energy expenses more effectively during the winter months.

Rising fuel poverty in the UK

The urgency of OVO Energy’s support comes against the backdrop of escalating fuel poverty. According to recent statistics, around 9 million households in England are currently experiencing fuel poverty, reflecting a staggering increase of 62% since 2020. A household is classified as being in fuel poverty if its remaining income, after accounting for housing costs and fuel, falls below the poverty line, and if it possesses an energy efficiency rating of band D or lower, as defined by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Recent polling conducted by OVO Energy highlights widespread concern among the public, revealing that 91% of respondents are anxious about their energy bills this winter. Notably, 71% express feeling more worried than they did the previous year, emphasizing the growing urgency of the situation.

Call for government action

In light of these challenges, OVO Energy is urging the government to implement a social tariff aimed at protecting low-income households from persistent high energy prices. Recent research by the Green Alliance indicates that such a tariff could lift many more individuals out of poverty compared to the government’s existing Warm Home Discount scheme, which is set to be introduced in 2024.

David Buttress, the CEO of OVO Energy, underscored the importance of collaborating with charity partners to ensure that support reaches those who need it most. He stated, “We’re providing support to those who need it most by working together with our charity partners and committing our largest ever customer support package.” However, he also pointed out that this initiative is not a permanent solution and emphasized the need for long-term reforms within the energy system.

How to access the support

While assistance is available throughout the year, applications for the enhanced winter support will commence on October 1. This timely initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat fuel poverty, which has seen OVO Energy allocate a remarkable £190 million in support to customers facing difficulties with their winter energy bills since 2022. Last year alone, OVO directly helped over 42,000 customers.

As the winter months approach and energy costs loom larger than ever, the support from OVO Energy stands as a beacon of hope for countless households struggling to keep warm. Through targeted assistance and financial relief, OVO Energy is taking significant steps to ensure that no family has to endure the cold without the vital resources they need.
