Transitioning from Urban Living to Rural Serenity: Embracing a Healthier, Peaceful Lifestyle with Family.

Topics covered
In a world characterized by rapid change, many individuals are drawn to the tranquility of rural life. For Claire Kenny and her partner, Kyle Jackson, this aspiration became a reality when they moved from their bustling London home to a coach house in Cambridgeshire.
This shift represented more than just a change of scenery; it marked a significant step toward a more peaceful lifestyle.
Their journey began unexpectedly during a lunch conversation. Kenny shared her long-standing desire to leave the city behind. Encouraged by a colleague to pursue this dream, particularly while their daughter, Lizzie, was still of preschool age, the couple decided to take action.
What started as a passing thought quickly gained momentum as they listed their three-bedroom terrace in Wimbledon.
Finding a new home in Cambridgeshire
The couple chose Cambridgeshire, a region that holds sentimental value for Jackson, who grew up nearby.
Their house-hunting efforts were broad, as they were open to any home that resonated with them. “We just went with the house that we liked,” Kenny recalls, highlighting their adaptable approach to finding a new sanctuary.
After an extensive search, they discovered a charming four-bedroom coach house, featuring original elements like stunning beams and antique doors. The property included a spacious garden, vastly larger than their previous outdoor space in London, along with an annexe that had once served as stables. This area was soon converted into an office for Kenny, aiding her transition from corporate life to freelancing.
The financial impact of the move
This relocation brought significant financial relief. The couple sold their Wimbledon home for £625,000, purchasing the coach house for £495,000. This strategic decision not only saved them over £100,000 but also provided double the living space compared to their former residence.
In March 2022, Kenny, Jackson, Lizzie, and their pets—including two corgis and a rescued greyhound—left the city behind. Their new home is located on the outskirts of March, surrounded by expansive farmland, turning their daily dog walks into scenic rural excursions.
A change of pace for better mental health
Leaving the hectic pace of London prompted significant changes in both Kenny and Jackson’s careers. Kenny, who previously managed employee wellness at Burberry, embraced freelance consulting instead. “The speed of London was overwhelming for me,” she reflects, noting that the quieter environment has positively impacted her mental health.
Jackson transitioned from his role as an account manager at a national newspaper to a position at a tech startup. This career shift aligns with his professional goals and complements their new lifestyle.
Rediscovering joy in daily life
Kenny has long faced mental health challenges, including anxiety and addiction. The pressures of urban living exacerbated these issues. However, moving to the countryside has been rejuvenating, allowing her to focus on her well-being. “I am still a work in progress, but the change of pace has been incredibly beneficial for me,” she shares.
With the Norfolk coastline just an hour’s drive away, the family enjoys weekends at the beach, taking pleasure in the simple joys of rural life. The contrast between their former life in London and their current existence in Cambridgeshire is stark but welcomed, illustrating the profound impact of their decision to pursue a calmer, more fulfilling lifestyle.
