A 41-year-old father from South Devon, Zack Van Aarde, is facing a life-altering diagnosis after experiencing alarming symptoms. As a father of two and an avid ultramarathon runner, Zack prioritized his health. However, persistent issues began disrupting his active lifestyle.
In 2024, Zack noticed symptoms of acid reflux, which caused discomfort and a sensation of heartburn. Initially, he dismissed these symptoms as common indigestion. With a prescription for omeprazole, aimed at reducing stomach acid, Zack hoped for relief, but the situation escalated.
The facts
The turning point came in July when Zack experienced severe complications. Early one morning, his wife, Jess, was startled awake by unsettling sounds. “I heard heavy breathing and then a thud,” she said. Rushing to the scene, she found Zack on the floor, having vomited blood.
Concerned for their children, Jess quickly called for emergency assistance.
Upon arrival at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Zack underwent an endoscopy to investigate gastrointestinal issues. Doctors initially suspected a stomach ulcer, but the diagnosis revealed stage four oesophageal cancer. The news was devastating for both Zack and Jess.
The realities of oesophageal cancer
Oesophageal cancer develops in the esophagus, the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. While exact causes are often unclear, risk factors such as severe, long-term acid reflux, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and obesity increase the likelihood of developing this disease. Tragically, many patients, like Zack, overlook early warning signs, mistaking them for benign ailments.
In the UK, approximately 9,500 cases of oesophageal cancer are diagnosed annually, with many being preventable. However, individuals often fail to recognize symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, nausea, and unexplained weight loss. The disease continues to rise among younger populations, highlighting the urgent need for awareness.
Facing the battle ahead
The initial treatment plan included surgery, typical for early-stage diagnoses. However, further testing prompted a shift to chemotherapy, aimed at shrinking the tumor before considering surgery. Zack’s regimen consists of chemotherapy sessions every two weeks, along with weekly blood tests to monitor his response. Despite the daunting outlook, Zack remains determined to maintain a positive attitude for his children, Joshua and Hannah.
“It’s incredibly challenging as a parent to share news like this with your kids,” Zack said. “However, their resilience has been inspiring, and they’re handling it remarkably well.”
Exploring alternative treatments
In his fight against cancer, Zack is pursuing alternative therapies alongside traditional treatment. He believes options like hyperbaric oxygen therapy—which enhances oxygen delivery to the body—can provide additional benefits. He has also incorporated IV vitamin C therapy and red light therapy into his regimen to support his recovery.
Zack emphasizes the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before exploring alternative treatments. “Chemotherapy affects all cells, both good and bad,” he cautioned. “It’s crucial to give my body the best chance to recover.”
