Explore a one-year, full-time NQ that combines live coaching, industry placement and SFA-recognised awards to kick-start your sports career

The NQ in Football Coaching is a practical, work-focused qualification delivered in partnership with the Partick Thistle Charitable Trust (PTCT). This full-time programme begins on 24th Aug 2026, 1 year and is based at the City Campus. Applications from International Students Welcome, and the course is designed to give participants both classroom knowledge and on-field experience.
Students will practice coaching sessions, study the rules that govern play, and gain exposure to the structures that support community sport. The blend of taught content and placement activity prepares learners to move into paid roles or to continue academic progression.
Course content and vocational awards
The curriculum balances practical coaching with underpinning theory. Learners will engage in supervised coaching sessions and module work covering laws of the game, event management, game analysis, human physiology and physical training methods. The NQ also includes an industry-recognised set of credentials: a standalone NPA in Sports Coaching, an NPA in Play in a Sporting environment and a PDA in Football refereeing that is recognised by the SFA.
These certified elements enhance employability by demonstrating applied competence in coaching, participant engagement and officiating.
Industry placement and coaching practice
Students are placed within PTCT programmes that suit their home location and travel needs so that practical learning is realistic and sustainable. These placements provide meaningful contact time with participants of differing ages and abilities, enabling learners to refine their coaching practice, communication skills and session planning. The partnership placement model is designed to mirror workplace expectations: mentee coaches will observe, deliver and receive feedback, improving their portfolio of evidence for future employment or study. A practical focus ensures that classroom theory is consistently tested on the pitch.
Entry requirements and selection process
There are clear academic and vocational entry routes. Applicants should hold one Higher and three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above, including PE and English (or Modern Studies, History, Media Studies or Biology) and the SFA 1:1 Coaching Award (or be working towards it); alternatively, a National Qualification at SCQF level 5 in a sports-related subject, or equivalent qualifications/experience, will be considered. Language support is specified: applicants whose first language is not English should hold at minimum SQA ESOL National 5 (or equivalent) for NC/NQ courses; for progression to HNC/D, ESOL Higher is expected.
Interview and practical assessment
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a group and/or individual interview. The interview includes a group discussion and a practical exercise performed with other applicants; bring suitable indoor gym wear for the activity. Some offers may be made directly from application forms where appropriate evidence is provided. The selection process aims to assess both potential and readiness to work in community coaching environments, so practical aptitude, communication and teamwork are equally important as qualifications.
Assessment, progression and practical details
Teaching takes place over two semesters running from August to June, and assessment is a mix of continual coursework and practical appraisal that reflects the vocational emphasis of the qualification. Successful graduates are well placed to work in the football sector as an assistant coach or assistant development officer, and can progress to the HNC Coaching with Sports Development for further study. For the programme you will need an IT device, a stopwatch and a whistle, and learners are expected to wear the college sports kit for practical sessions. These simple requirements keep focus on hands-on learning and professional standards.
