A Scottish charity has opened its first paediatric operating theatre in the West Bank, addressing the urgent need for specialized children's surgery in the region.
In a significant step forward for paediatric healthcare in the West Bank, a Scottish charity has opened its first dedicated paediatric operating room at Al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for children’s surgical care in a region where healthcare infrastructure has long been strained by conflict and restricted movement.
The Kids Operating Room charity, based in Dundee has been working tirelessly to assemble and install specialized medical equipment for paediatric facilities in countries facing humanitarian crises. The opening of this operating room in Hebron is a testament to their commitment and dedication.
The Challenge of Providing Paediatric Care in the West Bank
Until now, children in the West Bank have had to rely on adult wards for their surgical needs. This situation has placed immense pressure on the existing healthcare infrastructure, which is already struggling to cope with the rising demand for paediatric surgery.
The new operating room at Al-Ahli Hospital aims to alleviate this pressure by providing a dedicated space for children’s surgical procedures.
The construction of the operating room was one of the most challenging projects undertaken by Kids Operating Room, involving the assembly of 3,000 pieces of equipment. Despite the complexities, the charity’s team persevered, driven by the urgent need for improved paediatric care in the region.
A Commitment to Expanding Paediatric Healthcare
Kids Operating Room co-founder Garreth Wood and Middle East regional director Tariq Shadid were present at the opening ceremony in Hebron. Mr. Wood expressed the enormity of the challenge they faced in getting the operating room up and running, stating, “Getting this operating room here has tested us enormously.”
He emphasized that the need for paediatric surgery does not diminish in times of conflict. “But children in the West Bank still get appendicitis. They’re still born with conditions that need surgery. Conflict doesn’t change that – it just makes getting them the care they need much harder.”
The charity has committed to opening two further paediatric operating rooms in Bethlehem and Jericho ensuring that every child across the West Bank has access to safe surgical care. Mr. Wood highlighted the long-term impact of this initiative, stating, “This theatre isn’t a temporary fix, it’s permanent infrastructure that will serve children in Hebron for decades to come.”
The Impact on Local Healthcare
Dr. Youssef Al-Takrouri general director of Al-Ahli Hospital, expressed gratitude for the new operating room, noting that it will significantly reduce the waiting list for children in need of surgery. “There is a long waiting list for children who need these operations, and some have to wait a long time for surgery.”
With the new dedicated operating room, the hospital will be able to perform surgeries throughout the week, specifically for children and paediatric cardiac surgery. This represents a substantial improvement over the previous arrangement, where the hospital could only operate two days a week due to shared resources.
The opening of this paediatric operating room is not just a victory for Kids Operating Room but a beacon of hope for the children of the West Bank.
