However, the transition from education to employment remains a critical challenge, with a stark mismatch between educational attainment and workplace requirements.
The erosion of education data infrastructure
The Education Department’s research and statistics operation has faced severe cuts, with half of its employees laid off, including a significant portion from the Institute of Education Sciences. This institute, established in 2002, plays a pivotal role in producing the Nation’s Report Card, a congressionally mandated assessment that measures student progress in core subjects.
The current administration has rhetorically supported the Nation’s Report Card but has failed to provide the necessary operational support. Layoffs have left the suboffice responsible for the report with only a handful of employees, raising concerns about the reliability of state data collection. A former senior official described the center as ‘running on vapors,’ highlighting the precarious state of education data infrastructure.
The power of data-driven reforms
Data-driven reforms have proven to be effective in improving student outcomes. For instance, Mississippi’s significant improvements in reading scores were achieved through data-based reforms. Without reliable data, states struggle to replicate such successes and implement necessary changes. A functional federal data and research hub is essential for identifying troubling trends, adopting interventions, and holding elected officials accountable.
The White House has acknowledged the need for modernization within the Institute of Education Sciences, commissioning an independent review that called for a massive data-modernization effort. However, without a serious, well-funded commitment from the administration, these recommendations are unlikely to be fulfilled. Allowing research and statistics to deteriorate would have grave consequences for students and the future of the economy.
Education as a fundamental necessity

To liberate the next generation from mental slavery, the education system must encourage independent thinking and incentivize audacity. Band-aid solutions will not suffice; a comprehensive overhaul is necessary to bridge the chasm between credentials and capability.
