The closure of the St Giles Centre raises questions about the future of Elgin's retail landscape.

End of an Era for Elgin’s Shopping Scene
The St Giles Centre in Elgin has officially closed its doors for the last time, marking the end of a 34-year chapter in the town’s retail history. On its final day, only Subway remained operational while other businesses focused on packing up and vacating the premises.
The closure comes after Moray Council pursued a £750,000 unpaid business rates bill, leaving tenants with less than two weeks’ notice to vacate.
Community Reaction and Future Prospects
As the shopping centre closed, the future of the expansive High Street building remains uncertain.
However, there is a glimmer of hope among local stakeholders that a creative developer could breathe new life into the site. Elgin Bid manager Angela Norrie expressed her sadness over the closure but emphasized the importance of promoting other businesses in the town centre to maintain foot traffic. “What the St Giles Centre needs now is a developer with imagination,” she stated, highlighting the potential for revitalization.
Challenges Faced by Local Businesses
Many businesses faced significant challenges in the lead-up to the closure. Ashers Bakery director George Asher described the task of clearing out their equipment in less than two weeks as a “massive challenge.” Despite the difficulties, he noted that all staff members were retained, with hopes of maintaining a presence in Elgin. The urgency of the situation has led to increased costs and logistical hurdles for many retailers, as they scramble to adapt to the sudden closure.
Calls for Community Engagement
Local leaders, including Moray MSP Richard Lochhead, have called for clarity from the shopping centre’s owners regarding the future of the site. Lochhead urged the owners to engage with community representatives to discuss potential plans for redevelopment. “The centre is in a prime location in the heart of the town, and everyone is wondering what happens next,” he remarked. With ongoing multi-million-pound projects in the area, there is optimism that Elgin can evolve into a vibrant shopping destination once again.
