Against the Grain bar in Elgin undergoes major upgrades to better serve the community.

Topics covered
Against the Grain, a beloved bar located in the heart of Elgin, has officially reopened its doors following an extensive renovation aimed at improving the overall experience for its patrons. Since its inception in 2018, this craft beer shop and taproom has become a favorite among beer enthusiasts, thanks to its cozy atmosphere and carefully curated selection of brews.
Major upgrades to facilities
The renovation project, which took place at 25 Batchen Street, was spearheaded by Ant Fitzgerald and his team, including Tom Green and directors Juliette and Callum Buchan. The upgrades were designed to address the growing demand for seating and improved facilities.
Previously, the bar could accommodate only 20 guests, but the recent enhancements have doubled its capacity to 40. Additionally, the number of toilets has increased from one to three, significantly improving convenience for visitors.
Investment in community and comfort
The total cost of the makeover is estimated to be between £13,000 and £15,000, with financial support coming from the Moray Town Centre Capital Grant Scheme, which covers up to 50% of the renovation costs. This initiative aims to promote redevelopment and support both existing and new businesses in the area. Director Juliette Buchan expressed her excitement about the upgrades, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a community-oriented atmosphere.
Looking forward to a vibrant future
Juliette shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We have been wanting to give the premises a bit of a revamp for a little while. So it is great to have more toilets and double the capacity, which will especially be helpful on Saturdays.” The renovations also included the installation of new windows and a modern heating system, further enhancing the bar’s appeal. The team is committed to preserving the cozy environment that has contributed to their success, ensuring that Against the Grain remains a welcoming space for all.
As the bar welcomes back patrons, the management expresses gratitude to Elgin Bid for their assistance with the funding application and to the landlord for their unwavering support throughout the renovation process. With the upgrades complete, the team at Against the Grain is eager to continue serving the community and providing a comfortable gathering place for beer lovers.
