In a move to accommodate enthusiastic football fans, several pubs in Aberdeen have received approval to remain open until 5am on the night of the Super Bowl. This decision comes as hospitality leaders sought to extend their alcohol licenses for the highly anticipated game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, scheduled for February 9.

Super Bowl excitement in Aberdeen

The Super Bowl, one of the most-watched sporting events in the United States, will be broadcast live from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, with kickoff set for pm UK time. The event has garnered significant attention, especially with pop icon Taylor Swift expected to be watching from afar, alongside a host of dedicated fans in Aberdeen.

Late-night licenses granted

Owners of four local pubs, including the Bridge Street Social Club, have successfully petitioned the Aberdeen licensing board for extended hours. JP McGivney, a representative for the club, explained that the request for a 5am closing time is to ensure patrons have ample time to enjoy the game, particularly if it goes into overtime. He likened the potential overtime scenario to ‘penalties in football terms,’ emphasizing the need for flexibility in serving hours.

Ensuring safety for late-night revelers

While the licensing board unanimously approved the extended hours, concerns were raised regarding the safety of patrons leaving the pubs in the early hours of the morning. Councillor Marie Boulton expressed the importance of maintaining order and ensuring that the late-night crowd does not cause disturbances. In response, McGivney assured the board that there would be door stewards present to facilitate a smooth dispersal of customers at closing time.

Other establishments, such as Triplekirks and The Bobbin, will also be open until 5am, while Ma Cameron’s will close at 4am. This initiative reflects the growing trend of accommodating sports fans and creating a vibrant atmosphere for significant sporting events.

As the Super Bowl approaches, Aberdeen’s pubs are gearing up for a night of excitement, camaraderie, and, of course, football. With extended hours and a commitment to safety, fans can look forward to celebrating this American tradition in style.
