Aberdeen emerges as a new hub for black tech professionals

Black Tech Scot initiative aims to empower black professionals in Aberdeen's tech scene

Professionisti tech neri a Aberdeen, innovazione e opportunità
Aberdeen si afferma come un centro emergente per i professionisti tech neri, offrendo nuove opportunità.

In recent years, Aberdeen has been gaining recognition as a burgeoning center for black tech professionals, thanks to the efforts of individuals like Timi Adegunwa. A Nigerian-born cybersecurity specialist, Timi moved to the Granite City in 2012, seeking a safer and more affordable lifestyle compared to the chaos of London.

Since her arrival, she has witnessed a remarkable increase in the Nigerian population in the area, which has inspired her to take action.

The growth of the Nigerian community in Aberdeen

When Timi first settled in Aberdeen, she was part of a small community of around 100 Nigerians, primarily professionals in the oil and gas sector.

Fast forward to today, and that number has surged to nearly 300, with Inverness reportedly hosting even more. This influx is largely driven by job opportunities in various fields, particularly healthcare, where skilled workers are filling essential roles. Timi notes, “These people are coming for opportunity, and they’re bringing their skills and culture with them.”

Launching Black Tech Scot

Recognizing the need for representation and support within the tech industry, Timi launched Black Tech Scot at Aberdeen’s One Tech Hub. This initiative aims to create pathways for black individuals aspiring to enter Scotland’s thriving tech sector. With a strong emphasis on mentorship, peer support, and networking, Black Tech Scot is designed to empower black professionals, helping them navigate the challenges of the industry.

A sense of belonging and cultural pride

Timi’s passion for her culture and her new home is evident as she describes her identity as an “Ijebu-Scot.” She embraces her vibrant heritage while also feeling a deep connection to Scotland. “Scotland has welcomed me, and I want to help others like me feel that same sense of belonging,” she shares. Through Black Tech Scot, Timi hopes to foster a community where black professionals can thrive, celebrate their culture, and contribute to the growing tech landscape in Aberdeen.

As Aberdeen continues to evolve into a hub for diversity in technology, initiatives like Black Tech Scot are crucial in ensuring that all voices are heard and represented. Timi Adegunwa’s commitment to empowering black professionals is paving the way for a more inclusive future in Scotland’s tech sector.
