Farmers gather in Aberdeen to voice concerns over tax relief changes.

In a powerful display of unity, farmers drove tractors through the streets of Aberdeen today, protesting against the UK Government’s proposed changes to inheritance tax reliefs. This protest, which was originally scheduled for last weekend but postponed due to Storm Eowyn, highlights the growing concerns among farmers regarding the future viability of family farms across the UK.

Concerns over inheritance tax relief cuts

The proposed changes, set to take effect in April 2026, aim to significantly reduce inheritance tax reliefs for farmers. The UK Government claims that these changes will only impact approximately one-quarter of all UK farms.

However, a recent study conducted by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board paints a different picture, revealing that more than 75% of Scottish farms larger than 123 acres could be affected. This discrepancy has fueled fears among farmers that the reforms could jeopardize the sustainability of their operations.

Rally details and farmer solidarity

The rally commenced at Thainstone Mart, located near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, around 11 AM. Farmers drove their tractors along the A96 towards Aberdeen, making a stop at Marshall’s Farm Shop in Kintore after turning at Bucksburn. The sight of tractors lining the roads served as a poignant reminder of the agricultural community’s determination to stand against policies they believe threaten their livelihoods.

The impact on family farms

Family farms are the backbone of the UK agricultural sector, and the proposed tax relief cuts have raised alarms about their long-term viability. Farmers argue that these changes could lead to increased financial strain, making it difficult for them to pass down their farms to future generations. The protest today was not just about tax relief; it was about preserving the heritage and future of farming in Scotland.

As the convoy of tractors made its way through Aberdeen, the message was clear: farmers are united in their fight against these proposed changes. The powerful scenes captured by our photographer Kenny Elrick illustrate the determination of the agricultural community to protect their way of life.
