This summer, the Highland League will witness a heartwarming reunion, bringing together former players, coaches, and officials for a day of nostalgia and camaraderie. Organised by Scott Taylor, a former player with a rich history in the league, this event aims to celebrate the bonds formed on and off the pitch.

A successful inaugural event

Last year’s reunion in Aberdeen was a resounding success, attracting 94 attendees who shared stories and rekindled friendships. Taylor, who played for clubs such as Keith, Buckie Thistle, and Cove Rangers, expressed his excitement for making this gathering an annual tradition.

“The turnout was really good last year, and I think it’s important it wasn’t just in Aberdeen every year,” he said.

Details of this year’s gathering

This year’s reunion is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, at The Granary in Elgin, running from 1 PM to 5 PM, with the option for attendees to stay longer. Taylor chose Elgin for its central location, making it accessible for many former players and officials. “Elgin’s quite a central location, so it’s a good place to have it,” he noted, hinting at the possibility of hosting the event in Inverness next year.

Inclusivity and community spirit

The reunion is not limited to players alone; it welcomes everyone involved in the Highland League, including physios, committee members, and referees. “The more the merrier!” Taylor exclaimed, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the event. The Highland League is known for its friendly atmosphere, and Taylor believes that the spirit of camaraderie continues to thrive among its former participants.

With the help of a dedicated WhatsApp group comprising players from various teams, Taylor has been able to spread the word effectively. Notable figures like Billy Ferries and Andy MacLeod have played a crucial role in promoting the reunion, ensuring that many will gather to celebrate their shared history in the league.

As the date approaches, excitement builds for what promises to be another memorable day, filled with laughter, stories, and the rekindling of old friendships. The Highland League reunion is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of community, spirit, and the love of football that binds everyone together.
