Discover the benefits of Scotland's new overnight parking scheme for campervans.

Topics covered
Campervan and motorhome enthusiasts can now enjoy a budget-friendly overnight parking option across Scotland, thanks to the Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) initiative known as the ‘Stay the Night’ scheme. For just £10 per night, travelers can park their vehicles at a selection of 50 designated car parks, providing a convenient solution for those exploring the scenic landscapes of the north and north-east regions.
Expanding overnight options for travelers
This year, the scheme has expanded significantly, with 12 car parks specifically catering to self-contained campervans and motorhomes. The initiative aims to address the increasing demand for overnight stopping places while simultaneously supporting rural businesses and communities.
The overnight stays are limited to one night only, available from 6 PM to 10 AM, and visitors are required to wait 48 hours before returning to the same location.
Convenient payment and site features
Travelers can easily pay the £10 fee through the RingGo app or by phone at most participating sites. However, those utilizing locations equipped with chemical waste disposal facilities will incur a slightly higher fee of £13. Among the newly added sites this season are the picturesque Donview in Aberdeenshire, known for its proximity to stunning hill walks like Bennachie, and the beautiful coastal forest and sands at Culbin.
Guidelines for a pleasant stay
To ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors, FLS has established several guidelines. Campers are reminded that fires, barbecues, and tents beside vehicles are strictly prohibited. Additionally, guests are encouraged to take their rubbish with them and maintain low noise levels to respect the natural surroundings. FLS staff will conduct regular checks to ensure compliance with these rules, promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.
Supporting local businesses through tourism
Alan Chalmers, the FLS visitor planning manager, expressed optimism about the scheme’s impact on local tourism. He stated, “Motorhomes and campervans are a major part of Scotland’s tourism traffic. Increasing the number of sites that allow people to stay overnight will help to meet the growing demand for stopping places. It also encourages people to stay a little longer at locations they would otherwise have passed through, providing a boost to many small rural businesses.”
With the new overnight parking options, Scotland is set to enhance the experience for campervan and motorhome owners, making it easier than ever to explore the stunning landscapes while supporting local economies.
