Colin Soulsby's journey from diagnosis to recovery highlights the importance of regular dental check-ups.

Topics covered
In a remarkable turn of events, Colin Soulsby, a 67-year-old chemical engineer from Aberdeen, found his life hanging in the balance not due to a routine medical examination, but rather during a dental check-up. This story underscores the critical role that dental professionals play in the early detection of serious health issues, including cancer.
The unexpected diagnosis
During a routine dental visit, Colin’s dentist noticed a suspicious lesion on his tongue. Although Colin was aware of the lesion, he had not considered it a significant concern. However, the dentist’s insistence on further investigation led Colin to undergo a series of biopsies, ultimately resulting in a diagnosis of tongue cancer in January 2023.
“I thought that was it for me,” Colin recalls, reflecting on the devastating news that followed a tumultuous period in his life.
From surgery to recovery
Colin’s cancer diagnosis came on the heels of a challenging recovery from spinal fusion surgery, which he had undergone just months prior. Following the surgery, he suffered a catastrophic brain bleed that required emergency intervention. After spending two-and-a-half months in rehabilitation, Colin faced yet another hurdle when he learned of his cancer diagnosis. The subsequent surgery to remove the tumor involved complex procedures, including the reconstruction of part of his mouth using tissue from his shoulder. This surgery, while necessary, left Colin with significant after-effects, including difficulties in speaking and eating.
The importance of awareness and support
Despite the challenges, Colin remains grateful for the support he received throughout his journey. He emphasizes the importance of the entire medical team, from his dentist to speech therapists and nurses, in aiding his recovery. “It’s not just about the surgeon,” he states, highlighting the collaborative effort required in such complex medical situations. Colin also reflects on the psychological impact of his diagnosis, noting the lingering fear of cancer recurrence. With the medical community considering patients at risk for ten years post-diagnosis, Colin is determined to reclaim his life and independence.
Advocating for dental health
Colin’s experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular dental check-ups. He urges others not to overlook their dental appointments, as they can be pivotal in detecting health issues early. “I didn’t know about tongue cancer,” he admits, “but the dentist spotted it. He made me follow it up. And that saved my life.” As he prepares to participate in the Brave fashion show fundraiser for Friends of Anchor, Colin aims to raise awareness about tongue cancer and express gratitude to those who supported him through his ordeal.
Looking ahead
As Colin continues his journey of recovery, he focuses on spending quality time with his family and staying active. He acknowledges the emotional toll of his experience but remains optimistic about the future. With a message for others, he emphasizes the importance of vigilance in health matters, particularly in dental care. Colin’s story is not just one of survival but also a testament to the critical role that dental professionals play in the broader healthcare landscape.
