Mini-heatwave expected in north-east Scotland next week

Temperatures could reach up to 21C as summer-like conditions arrive.

Sunny weather forecast for North-East Scotland next week
A mini-heatwave is set to bring warm weather to North-East Scotland next week.

Warm weather on the horizon

According to the Met Office, parts of north-east Scotland, including the Highlands and islands, are poised to experience a mini-heatwave next week. As the month of May approaches, temperatures are expected to soar, reaching highs of 21°C by mid-week.

This surge in warmth is attributed to a high-pressure system situated to the east of the UK, coupled with low pressure to the west, allowing heat to flow in from mainland Europe.

Weekend weather outlook

Before the warm weather sets in, this weekend will see cooler and more unsettled conditions across the region.

However, as Monday arrives, temperatures are predicted to rise steadily each day. By Wednesday and Thursday, areas such as Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands are likely to experience the warmest temperatures of the week. Despite the rise in temperatures, the Met Office has indicated that none are expected to challenge Scotland’s all-time April temperature record, which stands at 27.2°C, set on April 17, 2003, in Inverailort.

Temperature predictions for key locations

Several towns and cities in the north-east and the Highlands are forecasted to enjoy unseasonably warm temperatures next week. For instance, Aberdeen is expected to reach 18°C on Monday, April 28, while Elgin could see temperatures climb to 17°C on Wednesday, April 30. The Highland capital is predicted to hit 20°C on the same day. Aberdeenshire towns are also set to bask in warmth, with highs of 21°C anticipated on Wednesday, April 30, alongside 20°C on Monday and 19°C on Tuesday. Other notable forecasts include 14°C in Kirkwall and 12°C in Lerwick on Wednesday, April 30.

In addition, the Argyll town is expected to experience temperatures of 19°C on both Tuesday and Wednesday, while the Blue Toon may only reach 13°C on multiple days next week. Stonehaven is predicted to see a high of 16°C on both Monday and Wednesday, and Stornoway is expected to reach 17°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, although the former day may be cloudier. Wick is also forecasted to hit a maximum of 16°C on Wednesday, April 30.

A spokesperson from the Met Office commented, “Wednesday is expected to be the peak of the heat, with temperatures in Scotland potentially reaching 25°C, and low 20s being more widespread. Compared to last April, we will see higher values.” As the region prepares for this warm spell, residents are encouraged to enjoy the pleasant weather while it lasts.
