In a bold move to enhance their squad, Aberdeen FC’s manager, Jimmy Thelin, has made it clear that the club’s global search for signings will not overshadow the importance of nurturing Scottish talent. The Dons recently secured a deal for Australian winger Nicolas Milanovic from Western Sydney Wanderers, but Thelin insists that local players remain a crucial part of their recruitment philosophy.
Commitment to Scottish talent
Since taking over the managerial role last summer, Thelin has made nine permanent signings, all of whom hail from overseas. However, he is keen to strike a balance by integrating Scottish players into the squad. This season, the only Scot among the permanent signings is Millwall striker Kevin Nisbet, who has made a significant impact by scoring 13 goals.

Thelin emphasized, “Attracting top Scottish talent and giving them a platform to shine is part of my recruitment philosophy.” He recognizes the importance of the Scottish transfer market and is determined to improve Aberdeen’s standing within it. “It is a market we try to be better at,” he stated, highlighting the club’s commitment to developing local players alongside their international acquisitions.

With UEFA regulations requiring clubs to have a minimum number of homegrown players, Thelin’s strategy aligns with these requirements. Clubs must register a squad of no more than 25 players, including at least eight trained by clubs from the same national league. This rule underscores the necessity for clubs like Aberdeen to invest in their youth systems and local talent development.
