Remembering VE Day: Honoring the Sacrifices of the Past
As the world marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, communities across the UK are preparing to pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought for freedom during World War II.

This year’s commemorations hold a special significance, as they may be among the last official events attended by surviving veterans of the conflict. With the passage of time, the number of those who served in the war diminishes, making it all the more important to honor their sacrifices.

Local Commemorations Across the North-East

In the north-east of Scotland, cities and towns are set to host a series of events to remember the fallen and celebrate the end of the war. Major Grenville Irvine-Fortescue MBE, chairman of the Gordon Highlanders Association, has outlined a schedule of services that will take place in Aberdeen, Huntly, and Keith. These events will feature the Gordon Highlanders Association Drums and Pipes, local clergy, and dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant for Aberdeen City, David Cameron, who will lay a wreath at the Castlegate in Aberdeen.

At AM, the commemoration in Keith will begin at the Gordon Highlander Memorial, while the Huntly service will take place at midday at the Huntly War Memorial. These gatherings aim to bring together veterans, their families, and community members to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war and to foster a sense of unity and remembrance.

Honoring the Last Surviving Veterans

Among those expected to attend is Jim Glennie, 99, the last surviving Gordon Highlander who participated in the D-Day landings. His presence serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience displayed by those who fought. Major Irvine-Fortescue encourages maximum attendance from veterans and their families, emphasizing that while the services will focus on the Gordon Highlanders, all veterans and their descendants are welcome to join in the remembrance.

As the world continues to face conflicts, including the ongoing situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, the significance of VE Day resonates deeply. Major Irvine-Fortescue highlights the importance of taking a moment to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, allowing future generations to live in relative peace. He urges the community to reflect on the resilience of the British people and the sacrifices that have shaped the nation.

A Call to Remember and Celebrate

VE Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a celebration of the end of a devastating conflict. Major Irvine-Fortescue reminds us that the joy felt at the war’s conclusion was profound, contrasting sharply with the fear and uncertainty experienced during the war. He encourages everyone to celebrate the achievements of those who fought and to recognize the importance of remembering history.

As we gather to commemorate this significant milestone, let us honor the legacy of the veterans who fought bravely for our freedom. Their sacrifices should inspire pride in future generations, reminding us of the horrors of war and the value of peace. The 80th anniversary of VE Day serves as a powerful reminder of the past and a call to cherish the freedoms we enjoy today.
