The community unites to support a St Fergus colleague facing a life-changing injury.

On a sunny Friday at Newmachar Golf Club, the community came together to support Calvin Cheyne, an Oceaneering ROV pilot who is facing a challenging road to recovery after a serious health incident. The charity golf day aimed to raise over £20,000 to assist with his medical expenses and rehabilitation efforts, marking a significant milestone in the fundraising campaign initiated by his family and colleagues.

Calvin Cheyne’s health crisis

In the summer of 2024, Calvin underwent surgery for Chiari Malformation, a condition characterized by the displacement of brain tissue into the spinal canal. The procedure, performed at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, was initially deemed successful.

However, during his recovery, a tragic incident occurred when Calvin choked on a piece of toast, leading to a catastrophic collapse. Rushed to intensive care, he was placed in a medically induced coma as doctors worked to stabilize his condition.

Subsequent MRI scans revealed that Calvin had suffered permanent damage to both his spinal cord and brain stem, resulting in the heartbreaking prognosis that he may never walk again. This devastating news has not only impacted Calvin but has also deeply affected his family, friends, and colleagues at Oceaneering.

Fundraising efforts gain momentum

In September, Calvin’s family took the initiative to set up a JustGiving page to help raise funds for his recovery. The response from the community was overwhelming, prompting his colleagues to organize the charity golf day at Newmachar Golf Club. The goal was to raise £20,000, which would significantly contribute to the ongoing fundraising efforts and help cover the costs of Calvin’s rehabilitation.

Approximately 100 participants joined the event, showcasing the strong sense of community and support for Calvin. Numerous local businesses generously donated prizes and contributions, further enhancing the event’s success. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and hope as golfers took to the course, united by a common cause.

Capturing the spirit of generosity

The day was not only about raising funds but also about celebrating the spirit of generosity that defines the community. Local photographer Kath Flannery was on hand to capture the essence of the event, documenting the smiles, laughter, and heartfelt moments shared among participants. Each photograph tells a story of resilience and support, reflecting the collective effort to uplift Calvin and his family during this challenging time.

As the day concluded, the organizers expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received, emphasizing that every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference in Calvin’s journey to recovery. The event not only raised funds but also raised awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with similar health issues, fostering a sense of solidarity within the community.
