Wardhill Castle Airbnb faces closure over water safety issues.

The picturesque Wardhill Castle, a historic 12th-century estate in Scotland, has recently faced significant scrutiny as its owners, William and Sarah Leslie, have been ordered to cease operations of their Airbnb rental. This decision comes amid alarming reports regarding the quality of the tap water supplied to guests, raising serious health concerns.

Background of Wardhill Castle

Wardhill Castle has been a cherished family residence for over 800 years, serving as a private retreat for the Leslie family. Nestled in the lush woodlands near Inverurie, the castle has been a sanctuary away from the public eye.

However, in 2014, the Leslie siblings, including actress Rose Leslie, began transforming the estate into a commercial venture, introducing glamping sites and refurbishing various buildings for rental purposes.

Environmental health concerns

Despite the castle’s charm and historical significance, the local Environmental Health officials have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of the water supply. In September 2022, the couple was granted a license to operate the Airbnb under the condition that they would provide evidence of drinkable tap water within nine months. However, as of now, no such evidence has been submitted, prompting officials to take action.

In November, environmental officers conducted tests on the water supply and found it did not meet safety standards. Instead of complying with the request to install a nitrate filtration system, the Leslies proposed to supply bottled water to guests, a solution deemed inadequate by health officials. They emphasized that providing safe drinking water is a fundamental requirement for all short-term rentals, and failure to do so poses significant health risks.

Consequences of non-compliance

Following repeated attempts to encourage compliance, the Environmental Health department recommended revoking the couple’s Airbnb license. The committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of this recommendation, with six out of eight members supporting the motion to terminate the license. This decision means that the Leslie family can no longer operate the Wardhill Airbnb and cannot reapply for a new license for at least a year.

The situation has sparked a broader conversation about the responsibilities of property owners in ensuring the safety and well-being of their guests. As the tourism industry continues to grow, maintaining high standards for health and safety is paramount. The case of Wardhill Castle serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations designed to protect both guests and the integrity of historic properties.

As the Leslie family navigates this setback, the future of Wardhill Castle remains uncertain. The estate, once a private haven, now faces challenges that could impact its legacy and the family’s connection to this historic site.
