Courage on the Catwalk: A Night of Triumph and Resilience
The annual event, Courage on the Catwalk, took place at P&J Live, transforming the venue into a vibrant celebration of strength and resilience. This year, the spotlight shone on a diverse group of women, each with a unique story of battling cancer.
The atmosphere was electric, filled with cheers and applause as the models showcased their journeys through fashion.
Unscripted Moments of Joy
One of the most memorable moments of the evening occurred when Kelly Butler, a 34-year-old model from Countesswells, unexpectedly tossed her cancer wig into the audience.
This spontaneous act not only drew a loud cheer but also symbolized her defiance against the illness that had affected her life since her diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma last August. Fellow model Jovi Fawcett expressed her surprise, stating, “We didn’t know she was going to do that. She kept that quiet.” This unscripted moment encapsulated the spirit of the event, highlighting the courage and determination of the participants.
A Celebration of Community and Support
Courage on the Catwalk is more than just a fashion show; it is a powerful reminder of the strength found in community. Over 900 attendees, including friends, family, and dedicated volunteers from Friends of Anchor, gathered to support the models. The event raised an impressive £118,000, which will be allocated to cancer and hematology support services in the north-east, including the Anchor Unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This financial support is crucial for ongoing care and resources for those affected by cancer.
Empowerment Through Experience
For many participants, the experience of walking the runway was transformative. Mhairi Anderson, a 51-year-old mother diagnosed with stage 3 renal cancer, expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m so honoured to have been chosen to do it. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever, ever done.” The camaraderie among the models was palpable, as they shared their journeys and supported one another throughout the event. Lisa Wilke, a breast cancer survivor, echoed this sentiment, praising the hard work of the organizers and the uplifting atmosphere backstage.
Honoring Those We’ve Lost
While the evening was filled with joy and celebration, it also served as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those battling cancer. The event honored Lynn Staite, a model who passed away before the show, with a standing ovation from the audience. Her son Andy reflected on her vibrant spirit and love for the arts, emphasizing the impact she had on those around her. This moment of remembrance underscored the importance of community support in the fight against cancer.
Looking Ahead
As the event concluded, applications for next year’s Courage on the Catwalk and its male counterpart, Brave, opened, inviting more individuals to share their stories and experiences. The legacy of Courage on the Catwalk continues to inspire and empower those affected by cancer, proving that through unity and resilience, they can face any challenge head-on.
