Incident Overview

On May 12, a serious incident occurred during a military training exercise in the Highlands of Scotland, resulting in injuries to three Belgian soldiers. The exercise, known as Red Condor, involved approximately 600 troops and was part of a larger operation taking place in Moray.

Reports indicate that the soldiers were participating in a planned training exercise when the shooting incident took place at RAF Tain around PM.

Injuries and Medical Response

According to the Belgian defence ministry, the three injured soldiers are currently in stable condition.

One of the soldiers is awaiting surgery in Scotland before being repatriated to Belgium. The other two soldiers sustained minor injuries, with one already returning to their military camp. In addition to the injuries, around ten other soldiers reportedly suffered hearing damage as a result of the incident. Emergency services responded promptly, transporting two of the injured soldiers to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary via air ambulance, while a third soldier was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Official Statements and Ongoing Investigation

The Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever, expressed his concern over the incident, wishing the injured soldiers a speedy recovery and extending condolences to their families. A police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Belgian defence authorities have stated that the families of the injured personnel have been informed, and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact details of what transpired during the training exercise.

Impact on Local Community

As part of the Red Condor exercise, helicopters from the Belgian Armed Forces are currently stationed at Kinloss Barracks in Moray and are expected to remain there until May 20. During this time, the military operations may cause slight disruptions to the local community, particularly due to night flying activities. Residents have been advised to remain aware of the increased military presence in the area.

This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with military training exercises, even in controlled environments. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in such operations.
