A serious accident at Tain junction highlights the dangers of careless driving.

In a tragic incident that underscores the dangers of careless driving, a grandmother was left with severe injuries following a collision at the Tain junction near the Asda supermarket. The accident occurred when 45-year-old Deborah Crawford made a reckless maneuver, turning into the path of another vehicle, resulting in a crash that has left lasting repercussions for the victims.

Details of the incident

The incident took place on May 11 of last year, as a couple was returning home from a day out with their granddaughter. At approximately PM, they were traveling southbound on the A9 when they approached the junction with the B9174.

As they neared the intersection, another vehicle, driven by Crawford, was heading northbound and attempted to turn right into the filter lane.

According to fiscal depute Martina Eastwood, the grandfather noticed Crawford’s vehicle waiting to turn and attempted to take evasive action. Unfortunately, the two cars collided, causing the couple’s vehicle to crash into a wall. The impact resulted in the grandmother, who was seated in the rear, suffering multiple broken bones, including six fractured ribs, a broken clavicle, sternum, and lumbar vertebra.

The aftermath of the crash

Emergency services were promptly called to the scene, and the injured grandmother was transported to Raigmore Hospital for treatment. While the grandfather and their granddaughter escaped without injuries, the emotional and physical toll on the grandmother was significant. In a heartfelt email read in court, she described the pain and suffering she endured, stating, “My confidence to drive has still not returned.” The incident has not only affected her but also her family, who have been a source of support during this challenging time.

Legal repercussions for the driver

Deborah Crawford appeared at Tain Sheriff Court, where she admitted to causing serious injury by careless driving. Her solicitor, David Patterson, expressed that Crawford accepted full responsibility for her actions and described the incident as a “terrible accident.” He noted that she was visibly shaken and remorseful, having stopped to assist at the scene.

During the court proceedings, Sheriff Neil Wilson acknowledged that the crash resulted from a momentary lapse in judgment, which could have had even more devastating consequences. Taking into account Crawford’s lack of previous offenses and her personal circumstances, the sheriff imposed a 12-month driving ban and a fine of £790. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of careless driving and the importance of road safety.
