Why Is root canal treatment necessary?
Root canal treatment is necessary when a tooth has become very decayed and has been left in this way for a long period of time.
Root canal treatment may also be necessary in the event that the pulp of the tooth suffers from a bacterial infection.
If root canal treatment is not undertaken during this time, bacteria may attack the nerve and root ends of the tooth, causing more serious dental problems.
What happens during root canal treatment? During the procedure, an electric dental drill is used to reach the pulp inside of the tooth and to hence access the root canal area.
The root canal will then be cleaned with the aid of dental tools. This will remove any bacteria.
The hole created will then be filled in with thin strips of gutta percha, a substance akin to rubber. This substance packs the tooth and prevents bacteria and any other unwanted substances from entering into the root canal.
The tooth will then be sealed with a filling or crown. The procedure is performed under a local anesthetic. What is the cost of root canal treatment?
If you are registered under an NHS dentist in the UK, you will find that root canal treatment falls under Band 2 of the NHS dental fees scale. This means that as of 01.04.2011, you will pay £47 for the treatment.
If you are registered under a private dentist, the cost of root canal treatment will be more expensive. While the cost varies between dental surgeries, the cost of private root canal treatment lies between £250 and £350.
What are the alternatives?
If your root canal is diseased, root canal treatment is likely to be the best option. If your tooth is seriously decayed or damaged, your dentist may recommend that the tooth is removed and cosmetically replaced. Your dentist will be able to provide you with advice on root canal treatment alternatives and their associated dental costs.
