More than 100,000 people thronged Piazza San Marco to watch the famous Flight of the Angel which every year opens the Venice Carnival.
This year it was fashion designer Margherita Missoni who wearing an amazing white winged-dress created by her grandfather Ottavio Missoni performed the 70 metre flight; hanging from a cable tied from the Campanile, Miss Missoni gracefully glided into the piazza and kicked off the Carnival festivities, also known as Sensation 2009, a series of events organised by Venezia Marketing Eventi and Mauro Pizzigati.
