East Dunbartonshire is partnering with sportscotland to bring a Summer of Sport to life, offering free activities and community support for children and young people.

East Dunbartonshire is gearing up for an exciting Summer of Sport in 2026, thanks to a dynamic partnership with sportscotland. This initiative aims to inspire physical activity among children and young people, with a range of free activities and community support programs.
The program, running from 26 June to 16 is designed to make sports accessible and enjoyable for all. With a focus on inclusivity and community engagement, the Summer of Sport promises to be a highlight of the year for local residents.
Free Activities for Children and Young People
One of the cornerstones of the Summer of Sport is the provision of free activities at various leisure centres across East Dunbartonshire. These activities are designed to cater to a wide range of interests and skill levels, ensuring that every child and young person can find something they enjoy.
Free Swimming
Children and young people aged 0-17, or those in school in East Dunbartonshire, can swim for free in the participating pools. Inspired by the success of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, this initiative encourages young people to stay active and have fun in the water. Whether it’s a few laps for fitness or a splash with friends, the pools are open and ready for action.
Free Court and Pitch Bookings
Young people and families can book a variety of courts and pitches for free. From badminton and pickleball to football and tennis, there’s something for everyone. Equipment is available for loan, although participants are advised to bring their own footballs. Bookings can be made in-person or by phone up to 24 hours in advance, ensuring flexibility and convenience.
Supporting Local Clubs and Young People
The Summer of Sport initiative extends beyond free activities, with a strong focus on supporting local sports clubs and providing opportunities for young people to get involved in the community.
Support for Local Clubs
Local sports clubs in East Dunbartonshire are encouraged to participate in the initiative by offering reduced-cost or free activities for children and young people. To access this funding, clubs must complete the Club Approval process. The team is on hand to support clubs through this process, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the program.
Opportunities for Young People
Young people aged 16-26 are invited to volunteer in sport or enhance their CVs through free training opportunities. These opportunities are available across a wide variety of sports until the end of March, providing valuable experience and skills for the future.
What’s Next?
The Summer of Sport is just the beginning of East Dunbartonshire’s exciting plans for promoting physical activity and community engagement. Updates will be published regularly on the council’s website and social media channels, including Facebook and Instagram. The Active Schools and Community Sport newsletter is also a great resource for staying informed about upcoming events and news.
With free activities available at the Allander Leisure Centre, the Leisuredrome, and Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre, as well as tennis courts at Huntershill Sports Hub, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get involved. Whether you’re looking to stay active, meet new people, or support your local community, the Summer of Sport has something for everyone.
