John Obi Mikel reveals fan sentiments on Chelsea’s new striker Liam Delap.

Topics covered
In a dramatic turn of events at Stamford Bridge, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has spoken out on the club’s latest signing, Liam Delap. The 22-year-old striker, who recently transferred from Ipswich for a hefty £30 million, made his debut during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC in the Club World Cup opener.
However, Mikel suggests that the excitement around Delap may not match what fans truly desired.
Mikel’s candid assessment
Mikel, who donned the Chelsea jersey over 200 times, did not hold back his opinions during the post-match analysis. He emphasized that while Delap is a promising talent, he was not the player that fans had been clamoring for.
“We need someone to come in, score goals, and finish those chances,” Mikel stated, echoing the thoughts of many supporters.
“Obviously, he [Delap] isn’t the guy the fans wanted. We know who the fans wanted.” Mikel pointedly referred to Victor Osimhen, the Napoli forward who has been a hot topic among Chelsea fans. “The fans wanted Victor Osimhen to come to the club but he didn’t,” he added, highlighting the disappointment surrounding the club’s decision to go with Delap instead.
Delap’s potential
Despite the initial disappointment, Mikel remains hopeful for Delap’s success. “Hopefully he hits the ground running and then he’s gonna quieten those doubters,” he said, expressing a desire to see the young striker thrive in his new environment. Mikel noted, “The runs I saw today, running behind defenders, I think he can be the guy to finish those chances.”
Delap’s debut was marked by an assist, showcasing his potential to integrate into Chelsea’s attacking strategy. Yet, the pressure is on. Mikel believes that Delap will need to outshine his competition, particularly Nic Jackson, who currently appears to be Enzo Maresca’s preferred option in the striker role. “I still think he will be the main man,” Mikel asserted, emphasizing the importance of healthy competition in the squad.
Looking ahead
As Chelsea prepares for their next Club World Cup match against Brazilian giants Flamengo, the focus will be on how Delap adapts to the rigors of top-flight football. Mikel’s insights leave fans pondering: will Delap rise to the occasion and fulfill the expectations that come with his hefty price tag? Or will he struggle under the weight of competition and the fans’ high hopes?
“During the season, if he’s not scoring then Delap gets his opportunity,” Mikel explained, laying out a potential pathway for the young striker. The next few matches will be critical in determining not just Delap’s role at Chelsea, but also how the club navigates the expectations of its passionate fanbase.
