New study reveals potato’s hybrid origins and evolution

A team of international scientists has revealed the complex genetic origins of the potato, tracing its evolution through hybridization.

In a remarkable leap forward for agricultural science, researchers have uncovered the ancient genetic origins of the potato, a food staple that’s beloved worldwide for its versatility. This groundbreaking study, published recently, reveals that the potato’s lineage stems from a hybridization event between ancestral tomato plants and a potato-like species known as etuberosum, dating back as far as nine million years in South America.

Unlocking the Genetic Mystery

Leading the charge on this research is an international team hailing from China, the United States, and the United Kingdom, who delved into the genetic connections among potatoes, tomatoes, and etuberosum. Their findings shed light on the intricate relationships between these species, which were previously muddled by conflicting genomic narratives.

As Sandra Knapp, a plant taxonomist at the Natural History Museum in London, noted, “Different parts of the genome told us different stories, but we now see a clearer picture of their connection.”

By meticulously analyzing 128 genomes, the scientists found that all members of the petota lineage exhibit a stable mixed genomic ancestry that incorporates both etuberosum and tomato lineages.

They propose that the common ancestor of tomatoes and etuberosum branched off around 14 million years ago, leading to the hybridization that formed the petota lineage approximately eight to nine million years ago.

The Role of Tubers in Evolution

This hybrid speciation event introduced a game-changing innovation in the evolution of the potato: the development of tubers. These edible structures not only enable the plant to reproduce without seeds but also allow it to store essential nutrients. This adaptability has helped the potato thrive across diverse geographic environments. As Knapp explains, “Hybridization is a really potent force in evolution,” which challenges the previous belief that it often results in sterile plants.

Alongside maize, rice, and wheat, potatoes account for about 80 percent of human calorie intake, underscoring their importance for food security. Yet, studying wild potato species has been a tough nut to crack, and this research stands as the most comprehensive genomic analysis of wild potatoes to date. Lead co-author Zhiyang Zhang highlighted the study’s significance in deepening our understanding of wild potato genetics.

Implications for Future Crop Development

The implications of this research stretch far beyond academic curiosity. Scientists are eager to investigate how tuber-related genes influence plant development, which could lead to new cultivars that grow faster, resist diseases, and are more environmentally sustainable. Knapp emphasized the need to integrate traits from wild species into cultivated potatoes to boost biodiversity and lessen the environmental impact of agriculture.

In talks about future applications, Zhang shared an exciting vision for creating new plant species that could produce fruit above ground while also yielding tubers below. This innovative concept, humorously dubbed “tomtatoes,” showcases the potential for agricultural advancements stemming from this research.
