Racially motivated hate crimes terrorize Larne community

The Larne community is reeling after masked individuals targeted two homes in racially motivated attacks, prompting a police investigation.

Residents of two homes in Larne are reeling after a shocking series of incidents that police are investigating as racially motivated hate crimes. These unsettling events unfolded on Thursday evening, leaving those affected feeling vulnerable and unsafe in their own neighborhood.

Details of the Attacks

It all started around 10:30 PM in the Hampton Crescent area. According to reports, a group of masked individuals vandalized a property, shattering a window and damaging the entrance door before making a quick getaway.

Chief Inspector Christopher Tate of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that officers responded promptly but, unfortunately, the suspects had already vanished by the time they arrived.

Meanwhile, reports from the Doric Way area revealed a similar scene of devastation.

Police found extensive vandalism, including three smashed front windows and two broken glass panels on the door. To make matters worse, racially charged graffiti was scrawled across the building’s exterior. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the residents, but the atmosphere of fear these violent acts have created is very real and deeply concerning.

Police Response and Community Reaction

Chief Inspector Tate didn’t mince words when addressing the situation: “We are investigating both of these reports as racially motivated hate crimes, with enquiries ongoing. This type of crime is utterly unacceptable and has no place in our society. Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home, regardless of their race or background.” He urged anyone with relevant information or video footage to reach out to the police at 101, citing incident numbers 1644 and 1650 from July 31, 2025.

The local community has rallied in response, expressing their outrage over these heinous acts. Alliance councillor Maeve Donnelly labeled the attacks as “appalling,” emphasizing that “there is no place for racism or any hate-fueled intimidation in our society.” She acknowledged the fear experienced by the victims and highlighted the importance of community solidarity during such trying times.

Continuing Investigation

The PSNI is determined to get to the bottom of these attacks. As the investigation progresses, officials are focused on gathering evidence and identifying those responsible. The community’s response has been a powerful statement against hate, revealing a collective desire for safety and peace.

Both police and local leaders are encouraging residents to stay alert and support one another. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges communities face in combating hate crimes and fostering an inclusive environment for all. As updates become available, the community and law enforcement are committed to ensuring that such incidents do not happen again, striving to make every individual feel secure in their own home.
