A father’s reckless decision leads to the tragic loss of his son's life, resulting in a lengthy prison sentence.

A 31-year-old man has just been sentenced to 10 years in prison following a tragic incident that claimed the life of his teenage son. Daniel Burba, hailing from Morecambe, was under the influence of cocaine when he lost control of his vehicle on April 20, leading to the heartbreaking death of 14-year-old Ryan Morgan.
What Happened That Day
On a busy bank holiday Sunday, Burba was driving his wife’s Peugeot van along the M6 near Lancaster when he suffered an epileptic fit. The van veered off the road, crashing into a tree. Ryan, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, sustained severe head injuries and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses painted a disturbing picture of Burba’s driving, describing it as “erratic.” Some reported that he was using hazard lights while narrowly missing other vehicles. One witness recalled seeing Ryan looking terrified as he desperately tried to take control of the vehicle just moments before the crash.
Can you imagine the fear and helplessness he must have felt?
Following the incident, authorities found a small bag of cocaine in Burba’s wallet. Blood tests revealed he was four times over the legal limit for driving under the influence of drugs. To make matters worse, it came to light that Burba had been advised by his doctor not to drive after experiencing seizures, rendering his actions that day particularly reckless.
The Court’s Decision
Burba pleaded guilty to charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving without insurance. During the sentencing, Judge Robert Altham condemned Burba’s actions, stating, “You knew that cocaine predisposed you to further fits… You should not have been behind the wheel at all.”
The judge didn’t hold back in pointing out Burba’s responsibility to safeguard his son, who had dreams of becoming a policeman. As part of his punishment, Burba was disqualified from driving for 14 years and five months, reflecting the gravity of his actions.
Ryan’s mother spoke out in court, expressing her outrage by labeling Burba’s actions as “disgusting.” She shared a heartfelt statement that conveyed the immense loss of her son and the pain inflicted on their family, saying, “Daniel has taken a precious son, brother, grandson, nephew, friend, and cousin.” Can words truly capture the depth of that grief?
Community Reflections
In the aftermath of the sentencing, Sergeant Martin Wilcock from the investigation team commented, “No sentence will ever make up for any loss of life, particularly in these tragic circumstances.” He noted that Burba would have to live with the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life, while Ryan would never have that chance.
This case has ignited important conversations about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and the critical need to follow medical advice regarding driving. It serves as a sobering reminder of the catastrophic impacts that reckless behavior can have—not just on the individual, but on families and communities as a whole. How many more tragedies do we need to see before we take these warnings seriously?
