An emergency landing at Birmingham Airport caused significant disruptions, but operations have now resumed.

Birmingham Airport is back in business after a small aircraft made an emergency landing on Wednesday, causing a ripple effect of delays and cancellations. The incident unfolded around 1:40 PM, with three people on the plane receiving treatment at the scene; fortunately, only one sustained minor injuries.
It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change at an airport, isn’t it?
Incident Overview
As soon as the emergency was declared, police, fire, and ambulance services rushed to the scene. Eyewitnesses and social media footage revealed a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air lying flat on the tarmac, a sight that surely raised alarms for travelers.
Initially, Birmingham Airport announced a temporary runway closure around 2:40 PM, advising that all flights would be grounded until at least 8 PM.
Fast forward to just before 8 PM, and the airport shared an update on social media that the runway had reopened, and operations were beginning to resume.
They extended apologies for the disruption, urging passengers to check their flight details and follow their airlines’ guidance. “Our teams have worked as quickly as possible, in line with strict protocols, to ensure a safe reopening of the runway,” the airport stated, emphasizing their commitment to passenger safety.
Response and Investigation
Even with the runway back in action, flights scheduled to depart as early as 2:10 PM faced significant delays, with some passengers left waiting until after midnight on Thursday to take off. The Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) has stepped in to investigate the incident, deploying a team of inspectors skilled in aircraft operations and engineering. This could help shed light on what went wrong.
Interestingly, the same model of aircraft, the Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, was involved in a tragic crash at London Southend Airport last July that resulted in four fatalities. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander weighed in, noting that while airport disruption was “minimal,” she recognized the frustration felt by many passengers caught up in the chaos.
Emergency Services and Aircraft Details
West Midlands Police confirmed their presence at Birmingham Airport following the emergency landing. They reported that the three individuals from the aircraft were assessed and discharged at the scene, thankfully avoiding serious injury. Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority has been notified, and operations were temporarily suspended pending further investigation.
West Midlands Ambulance Service received the call at 1:45 PM regarding the incident. Their Hazardous Area Response Team and paramedic officers quickly arrived on scene, where they found three patients who were treated and released. It’s great to see emergency services responding so efficiently, isn’t it?
Woodgate Aviation, the operator of the aircraft, released a statement confirming that the Beechcraft was heading to Belfast International Airport when it encountered landing gear issues, necessitating the emergency landing back at Birmingham. The company praised both their crew and the emergency services, expressing gratitude for their swift response. As investigations continue, the aircraft remains on the runway, highlighting how critical safety measures are in aviation.
