In a thrilling twist for food enthusiasts in Cardiff, a brand-new family-run restaurant called Genatsvale has opened its doors right in the city’s heart, bringing a taste of the unique and comforting flavors of Georgian cuisine to the locals.
As the first of its kind in Wales, this gem is located on St Mary Street and is proudly operated by Anzor, Nana, and their two sons, Nugzar and Gabriel.
Who are the faces behind Genatsvale?
Genatsvale isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a heartfelt endeavor for this family.
Nugzar, just 19 years old, is taking the reins as manager while juggling his economics studies at university. He sheds light on their motivation: “My parents have always loved cooking. Whenever we throw family parties, it’s always them in the kitchen.
We adore Georgian food, but there are no Georgian restaurants outside of London in the UK.” Isn’t it fascinating how a love for food can spark such a creative journey? This passion for their culinary heritage drove the family to create a space that not only showcases their roots but also helps educate others about the vibrant Georgian culture.
Nugzar also highlights a common misconception about Georgia, a small country with a population of around three million. “A lot of people think Georgia is a state in America. Some don’t even know the country exists,” he points out. The name Genatsvale carries a beautiful significance; it’s a term of endearment in Georgian that expresses deep affection for loved ones.
A dream turned into reality
The journey to opening this restaurant has been a dream in the making, especially for Anzor, who previously managed a phone shop in Cowbridge. With Nana’s experience in retail and their shared passion for cooking, they decided it was time to dive fully into this venture. “My dad’s dream was to open a restaurant, so we pursued this business instead,” Nugzar shares. And it seems like the entire family is on board, with Gabriel aspiring to become a chef, aligning perfectly with their vision for Genatsvale.
The restaurant’s interior captures the essence of a traditional Georgian eatery, thanks to Nugzar’s hands-on approach during renovations. “If you visited a restaurant in Georgia, it would feel very similar to this,” he emphasizes, pointing out the charming brickwork and artifacts that decorate the space. You might even notice lemons used as decor, a delightful nod to their abundance in Georgian streets.
Authenticity at the forefront
At Genatsvale, authenticity reigns supreme, especially when it comes to their wine offerings. Did you know that Georgia is recognized as the oldest wine-producing country in the world? “There are two companies that import them in London, so we have to drive there to get our stock,” Nugzar explains. The menu is a delightful mix of traditional Georgian soft drinks, including pear, tarragon, and grape, all adding to the immersive cultural experience.
Among the standout drinks is Veluri, crafted from grapes that grow exclusively in the Georgian village of Telavi, along with Chacha, a clear spirit that packs a punch. To enhance this authentic experience, the bar is staffed by Giorgi, a fellow Georgian. The menu boasts dishes made from scratch, showcasing a delightful fusion of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European influences. For those eager to indulge in genuine Georgian flavors, signature dishes like khinkali and khachapuri come highly recommended.
The launch of Genatsvale signifies a vibrant new chapter in Cardiff’s food scene, offering locals a unique chance to dive into a lesser-known cuisine and culture. With a strong commitment to authenticity and a warm family atmosphere, Genatsvale is set to become a beloved destination in the city.
