Discover Wales' first American-style mini-golf experience opening in Llangefni, offering an innovative twist on traditional courses despite legal challenges from Tiger Woods' business.

Topics covered
Wales is gearing up to unveil its very first American-style mini-golf facility next week in Llangefni, and it’s set to change the local recreational scene. This 18-hole course is designed to mimic the real deal, featuring realistic golf elements like rolling artificial turf and white sand traps.
It’s a place where both seasoned golfers and newbies can kick back and enjoy a round in a laid-back atmosphere.
Legal Challenges and Name Changes
But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. The excitement of the opening was dampened when Tiger Woods’ business team sent a cease and desist order regarding the course’s original name, which was inspired by Woods’ PopStroke mini-golf concept in the U.S.
Matthew Wharton, the pro golfer behind this venture, initially shrugged off the legal notice.
“It was a bit of a game, to be honest,” Wharton remarked. “I always hoped Tiger’s lawyers would be in touch because of the publicity it would generate.” Yet, he eventually decided to play it safe and changed the name to Golff Bach at Companies House, a title that resonates with the Welsh language and culture.
“We live in a Welsh language heartland, and I wanted the name to reflect that,” he added.
A Unique Mini-Golf Experience
So, what makes Golff Bach stand out from the usual crazy golf spots? For starters, it’s a scaled-down replica of real golf courses—no whimsical windmills or clown decorations here. The facility also boasts a pizza outlet and a Halfway House bar for refreshments, promoting a casual and enjoyable golfing vibe. Wharton emphasized that the goal is to make golf accessible to everyone while keeping that signature American flair.
“Come for the golf, stay for the pizza,” is the catchy slogan that captures the essence of the place. The on-site Popty Pizza restaurant will serve up wood-fired pizzas and bagels, making for a delicious addition to the golfing experience. Plus, the newly expanded dining area offers stunning panoramic views, allowing guests to soak in the beautiful surroundings while enjoying their meals.
Future Prospects and Community Impact
But Golff Bach is more than just a mini-golf course; it’s a revival of the golfing tradition in Llangefni, situated on the site of a former municipal course. The old council facility, which closed in 2018, is getting a fresh start with this new venture. Enhancements like a reception building featuring an Adidas golf clothing shop and a state-of-the-art Trackman simulator are set to elevate the facility’s appeal.
As the opening day approaches, the plan is to offer extended hours compared to traditional golf courses, catering to those looking for evening fun. This model, already a hit in the U.S. with similar upscale mini-golf venues, positions Golff Bach as a trailblazer in the UK market. Wharton is optimistic about what lies ahead, determined to create the ultimate mini-golf experience in Britain.
“Ours will be the first of the mini-golf concept in Britain,” he asserted confidently. “And we want it to be the best.”
