UPDATE AT 10:30 AM: A significant fire broke out at the historic BBC Television Centre in White City, London, early Saturday morning. Approximately 100 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded, deploying 15 fire engines to combat the blaze affecting the nine-storey structure on Wood Lane.
Fire Details and Emergency Response
According to the LFB, the first reports of the fire came in shortly after 3:00 AM. Crews from various stations, including Hammersmith and North Kensington, rushed to the scene. Images from the area depict heavy smoke billowing from the rooftop rotunda of the Helios Building, which has been repurposed for residential and commercial use.
“The fire is currently affecting floors towards the top of the building,” stated a spokesperson from the fire service. “A restaurant, external decking, and ducting are currently alight, and an unknown number of flats may also be impacted.”
Firefighters utilized drones to assist in extinguishing the flames while nearby streets filled with onlookers capturing the scene.
A police cordon was established, leading to the closure of several cafes and restaurants on the plaza below. Emergency responders, including the London Ambulance Service, were on-site, treating one individual who was later discharged.
Community Impact and Evacuations
Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. The Salvation Army was observed distributing sandwiches to emergency personnel working tirelessly at the scene. A rest center has been set up for those displaced by the fire.
Li Mei, a resident living across the street, recounted her experience: “I got up this morning, and my partner told me to look out of the window. There was so much smoke – we were worried it was going to get worse. Thank God it seems like nobody has died.”
Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, expressed gratitude towards the firefighters in a social media update, stating, “Thanks to the hardworking firefighters who continue to tackle a major fire in White City. Residents have been safely evacuated, with a rest center in place.”
Current Situation and Firefighting Efforts
As of late Saturday morning, smoke continued to rise from the building, and two 32-meter turntable ladders were deployed as water towers to combat the flames from above. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and efforts are ongoing.
The BBC Television Centre, known for its rich history, was the primary headquarters of the BBC until 2013 when the organization relocated to Broadcasting House. The Helios Building currently accommodates 162 homes, a gym, and a 47-bedroom hotel, making it a significant part of the community.
Authorities urge the public to avoid the area as fire crews are expected to remain on-site for the day. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
