Wayne Rooney shares a funny story about Louis van Gaal and Coleen

Wayne Rooney shares a cringe-worthy yet funny moment from his time at Manchester United that fans won't want to miss.

Football fans, an intriguing moment from the past is worth revisiting. Wayne Rooney recently shared an amusing anecdote about the first meeting between his wife, Coleen, and former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal. It’s a story that captures the essence of awkward encounters.

The First Meeting

Imagine a lunch at Old Trafford, bustling with players, their partners, and staff mingling together. Enter Louis van Gaal, the dynamic manager newly appointed at Manchester United. Rooney, then the team captain, was eager to introduce Coleen to his coach.

However, they were unprepared for van Gaal’s memorable comment.

During an episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney recounted how van Gaal approached Coleen for a conversation. He looked at her and remarked, “Your children, they look very much like the father.” Coleen simply responded, “Yeah.” Then, in classic van Gaal style, he added, “He has very strong sperm.” The sheer awkwardness of the moment is hard to fathom.

Coleen managed to take it in stride, and it sounds like the situation was ultimately met with laughter from everyone, including Wayne.

Rooney’s Take on Van Gaal

Despite the awkwardness of that exchange, Rooney has always characterized van Gaal as a “loud and bubbly character.” It’s interesting how a potentially embarrassing moment can evolve into a fond memory. Rooney expressed his respect for van Gaal, emphasizing that he learned significantly from him as a coach. “He was different and funny, but as a coach, I probably learned more from him than I did from anyone else,” Rooney stated.

However, there’s a twist: while Rooney holds fond memories of van Gaal, the results did not suffice to keep him at United. Just two days after winning the FA Cup in 2016, van Gaal was dismissed. It’s astonishing that a major trophy win could lead to a manager’s departure.

The Aftermath of the Cup Win

Fast forward to the FA Cup victory celebration. Rooney recalled that van Gaal appeared subdued and withdrawn during what should have been a festive occasion. “I think his wife maybe found out about his job situation at halftime,” he explained. It’s hard to imagine celebrating a cup win while anticipating job loss.

Amid the celebrations, Rooney approached van Gaal, encouraging him to enjoy the moment despite the uncertainty ahead. “Whatever is going on, just forget it and enjoy tonight,” he advised. Yet, van Gaal could not easily dismiss his concerns. “He stuck to his job until the end, and I have a lot of respect for him for that,” Rooney noted.

This tale is bittersweet. Here was a manager who led his team to victory but could not relish his success. “It was really sad because you looked at him and knew that he was going to be sacked,” Rooney reflected. Such is the nature of football—one can be celebrated as a hero one moment and face dismissal the next. The football world can indeed be unforgiving.
