ITV’s Coldwater: a gripping new series starring Andrew Lincoln

Coldwater is a spine-chilling thriller that dives deep into the complexities of family and identity, featuring a stellar cast led by Andrew Lincoln.

ITV has announced the premiere of a new thriller titled Coldwater, set to engage viewers with its compelling storyline and talented cast. The series will debut on September 14 and consists of six episodes. It features Andrew Lincoln, known for his role in The Walking Dead, alongside Eve Myles from The Guest.

Created by acclaimed playwright David Ireland, the series is filmed in Scotland, enhancing its chilling narrative.

Plot Overview

Coldwater follows John, played by Andrew Lincoln, who moves his family from London to the fictional village of Coldwater in search of tranquility.

However, John’s unresolved past and hidden anger soon threaten their peace. The series begins with John grappling with an identity crisis stemming from a disturbing incident in London, where he failed to intervene in a violent confrontation at a playground.

As John attempts to escape his turbulent past, life in Coldwater proves to be anything but peaceful. He befriends his neighbor Tommy, portrayed by Ewen Bremner, and quickly becomes entangled in a web of manipulation and doubt. Tommy, who seems charming and devoted to his wife Rebecca (played by Eve Myles), becomes a source of increasing tension for John.

Simultaneously, John’s wife, Fiona, played by Indira Varma, begins to question Tommy’s true intentions, further complicating the narrative. As John’s anger escalates, the series builds toward a climactic confrontation that unveils Tommy’s terrifying secrets.

Filming Locations and Inspirations

Although Coldwater is set in a fictional Scottish village, filming occurred in various locations throughout Scotland, including Glasgow, Dennistoun, Strathaven, and Dunlop in July 2024. David Ireland, the series’ creator, expressed his desire to capture the essence of his life in Scotland. He stated, “It’s the perfect location because I live here and I wanted to write something about my life away from Northern Ireland and the troubles.” Ireland aimed to create a narrative that reflects his experiences while moving away from themes of violence and tribalism.

Despite his intentions, Ireland acknowledges that themes of rage and conflict inevitably surfaced in the storyline, illustrating the complexity of human emotions and relationships. He expressed his admiration for Scotland, highlighting the warmth of its people and the talent of the local actors and crew.

Cast and Characters

The cast of Coldwater features a skilled ensemble, including Abigail Lawrie, Lois Chimimba, and Lorn Macdonald. Leading the series as John, Andrew Lincoln brings depth to the character, while Indira Varma enhances the role of Fiona. Ewen Bremner, recognized for his performance in Trainspotting, plays Tommy, the enigmatic neighbor whose charm conceals darker secrets.

The series promises to deliver intense twists and emotional depth, appealing to audiences who appreciate narratives that delve into personal struggles and moral dilemmas. Coldwater will air on ITV every Sunday at 9 PM, with all episodes available simultaneously on ITVX for those eager to binge-watch.
