Could a simple eye scan change your life? One woman's story shows just how crucial these tests can be.

Eye scans may seem like an unnecessary expense, but they can be life-changing. A recent case highlights the critical importance of these examinations. Lauren Harbert, a catering assistant from Didcot, faced severe headaches during her second pregnancy. Initially attributing her discomfort to stress and hormonal changes, she soon realized that her condition required further investigation.
When headaches become a concern
Lauren Harbert was accustomed to headaches, but during her pregnancy, they escalated. The constant pain became debilitating, disrupting her sleep and daily activities. After giving birth to her daughter Azaylia, her situation deteriorated. The headaches intensified and were accompanied by tinnitus.
Despite visiting her general practitioner, who attributed her symptoms to stress, Lauren sought a second opinion. In March 2023, she decided to pay for an extra Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) eye scan at Specsavers, a decision that would prove crucial.
The OCT scan provides detailed 3D images of the retina and optic nerve, enabling early detection of eye diseases such as glaucoma. During the scan, the optometrist noticed an alarming condition and referred Lauren for further testing. Subsequent hospital tests revealed a brain tumor the size of an orange. What began as a routine check-up turned into a life-threatening situation.
This incident underscores the importance of heeding our body’s signals. Lauren’s persistent headaches were ultimately a warning sign. It serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to prioritize health and seek timely medical advice.
Recovery and reflection
Following a nine-hour surgery to remove the tumor, Lauren emerged with a new outlook on life. Doctors informed her that, had the tumor remained undetected, it could have turned malignant. She now undergoes annual MRI scans for the next 15 years to monitor for any recurrence. This experience has instilled a strong belief in the importance of regular health check-ups.
Lauren advocates for eye health and encourages others to consider additional scans, stating, “If I hadn’t gone that day, I might not be here.” This powerful message emphasizes the potential impact of early detection.
Next time you are at the optician and offered an additional scan, reflect on the potential benefits. It may be a crucial step in safeguarding your health. Have you had any experiences that altered your perspective on health? Your thoughts are welcome.
