Romero expresses confidence in Tottenham’s direction

Tottenham's Cristian Romero shares his thoughts on the club's direction and ambitions.

Cristian Romero, captain of Tottenham Hotspur, believes the club is once again on a positive trajectory. However, he expressed frustration with past remarks regarding its failure to operate at a top-tier level. After leading Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years, he looks forward to the Champions League campaign.

Romero Reflects on Tottenham’s Trophy Success

In May, Romero played a pivotal role in securing the Europa League title for Tottenham. This victory not only ended a lengthy trophy drought but also granted the team a coveted spot in this season’s Champions League.

This success followed a tumultuous season where Romero made headlines with candid observations about the club’s spending compared to rivals such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

“Those clubs’ spending is something to imitate,” Romero remarked in December, indicating that Tottenham has the potential to compete consistently at the highest level.

His comments stirred discussions, reflecting the frustrations of a player eager for his club to match the ambitions of football’s elite.

Changes Within the Club and Future Aspirations

Following a managerial change that saw Ange Postecoglou leave just 16 days after the Europa League final, Romero praised his former boss for navigating numerous challenges during his tenure. “He achieved a lot despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist,” he stated.

As Tottenham prepares for their upcoming match against Villarreal, Romero addressed his earlier comments, acknowledging that his interviews may have appeared critical. “Yes, I did a lot of interviews which seemed like I was talking badly about people inside the club,” he admitted. “But I’m a person who sometimes makes mistakes.” He emphasized that his intentions were always rooted in a desire for the club to ascend to the highest levels of football.

The Road Ahead: Champions League Ambitions

Romero is optimistic about the club’s current state, stating, “I see a very, very organized club with a clear idea.” He expressed confidence in the coaching staff and the collective direction the team is heading towards. “Absolutely everyone inside is looking in the same direction, and that is the important thing,” he added.

The captain is eager to focus on immediate challenges, stating, “We hope obviously to continue like this. There are objectives for the season, but our heads are in tomorrow’s game.” As the team embraces the Champions League, Romero sees this as a fantastic opportunity for growth and achievement.

“We are going to enjoy that we’re back in the Champions League,” he concluded. “I believe we can achieve great things, and we are going to fight to lift another trophy.”
