Henderson Group’s community commitment drives impressive success
Henderson Group has achieved remarkable success, reporting sales approaching £1.4 billion and a profit margin of £64 million. This family-owned grocery business, located in Mallusk, has become a cornerstone in Northern Ireland, operating well-known chains such as Spar, Vivo, and Eurospar.
According to Paddy Doody, the company’s sales and marketing director, their dedication to the community is integral to their ongoing partnership with the Irish News Ulster All-Stars.
“When we think of our brand, Spar is deeply rooted in the local community,” Paddy explains.
“This principle was the driving force behind our decision to collaborate with the Irish News for this sponsorship initiative.” With over 400 locations across Northern Ireland and nearly 6,000 employees, the group’s influence is significant, as 98% of the population lives within a mile of a Spar outlet.
Community ties and family values
Paddy highlights the importance of family within both the Henderson Group and the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association). He underscores that participation in local sports is a tradition deeply embedded in family life, motivating both parents and children to get involved. “Many teenagers, including my own children, have launched their careers at Spar, further strengthening our connection to the community,” he states.
A personal connection to GAA
The director from Tyrone, who plans to retire next summer, reflects on how the essence of the GAA can often be missed by those outside the community. During a summer visit from friends in England, he fondly remembers showcasing the breathtaking landscapes of west Donegal. “As we turned a corner, we encountered a pristine GAA pitch, complete with changing facilities and spectator stands. I had to explain that this was a grassroots sport, an essential aspect of Irish culture,” he recalls.
Paddy recalls a significant moment from 2008 when he posed with his three daughters alongside the Sam Maguire and Tommy Markham Cups, an achievement that few counties can claim. His neighbor at that time, Joe McMahon, a player for Tyrone, added to the special occasion by bringing the Sam Maguire trophy to his home. “Imagine having the FA Cup sitting in your living room,” he reflects, noting the astonishment of his friends. “This highlights the strong connections and community spirit that define the GAA.”
Benefits of sponsorship
Paddy highlights a unique aspect of his role in the sponsorship deal with Spar NI, which includes receiving several exclusive Irish News All-Stars jerseys each year. “These jerseys are sent to my brother in Australia, where my three nieces participate in various sports, including Aussie Rules, soccer, and GAA. They love the uniqueness of the kits, as they are not available for purchase,” he explains.
Growth and transition in leadership
As Paddy prepares to step down from his position, he reflects on the changes and growth within the company. “When I first joined the company 22 years ago, the marketing team consisted of just three individuals. Today, that number has expanded to 17, and our marketing budget has increased dramatically from £900,000 to £6.8 million,” he states. He also notes that the sales team has doubled in size during his tenure.
As Paddy approaches retirement, he remains optimistic about the future of the Henderson Group’s partnership with the All-Stars. “I will ensure that my successors understand the importance of this sponsorship. They will recognize its value and continue the tradition,” he stated.
The Irish News Ulster All-Stars ceremony is set to take place on October 24 at the ICC Belfast. This prestigious event is bolstered by numerous sponsors, including Kingsbridge Private Hospital Group, Louis Boyd Menswear, O’Neills Sportswear, Options Technology, Canal Court Hotel, Carrickdale Hotel and Spa, Muldoon Accountants, Game of Thrones Studio Tour, and IFS Global Logistics.
