The Manchester community is grappling with the aftermath of a violent incident that occurred during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. A man identified as Jihad Al-Shamie targeted worshippers outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, resulting in tragic loss of life and several serious injuries.

This act has prompted immediate responses from law enforcement and community leaders, underscoring the urgent need for solidarity and enhanced security measures in places of worship.

Details of the attack

On Thursday morning, as the congregation gathered to observe Yom Kippur, Al-Shamie drove his vehicle into a group of people before launching a stabbing attack on an individual.

Two men, Adrian Daulby, aged 53, and Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, lost their lives in this brutal assault. Three others remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Police response and investigation

Police responded swiftly, with armed officers arriving at the scene within seven minutes of the first emergency call.

Tragically, it was revealed that one of the deceased victims sustained injuries from police gunfire while officers were attempting to stop Al-Shamie from inflicting further harm. Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson of Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Al-Shamie was not armed with a firearm, emphasizing the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the injuries caused during the urgent intervention.

In the aftermath of this attack, police have arrested three individuals on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses as part of their investigation, which is being supported by MI5 and the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre. Authorities are assessing whether a broader terrorist network is linked to Al-Shamie.

The identity of the attacker

Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, reportedly lived in the UK since childhood, receiving citizenship in 2006. Initial investigations indicated he had not been known to police or security services prior to the attack. Local residents described him as a reclusive figure who kept to himself.

Community response and support

In response to the attack, Greater Manchester Police have pledged to enhance their presence in Jewish communities across North Manchester, Bury, and Salford. This measure aims to reassure the public and provide support to those affected. Community leaders and officials, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, have expressed condolences and committed to ensuring the safety of Jewish congregations throughout the UK.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis condemned the attack, highlighting the alarming rise in antisemitic incidents and the urgent need for societal change. The community’s resilience was evident as worshippers acted heroically to prevent further casualties by locking the synagogue doors as Al-Shamie attempted to gain entry.

As investigations continue, the hope remains that through collective action and vigilance, such tragic events can be prevented in the future. The community stands united in mourning the lives lost and supporting each other during this difficult time.
