In my new role as chair of the RICS NI regional board, I will advocate for these technological advancements and nurture innovation through strategic partnerships with academic institutions.
With over 25 years of experience in residential surveying and leadership, I currently serve as the regional development director at e.surv Chartered Surveyors, a firm specializing in residential valuations and property risk services. During my tenure, I will focus on four key areas: boosting the credibility and visibility of our profession, enhancing engagement and influence, facilitating professional growth, and promoting a sustainable built environment—a core objective of RICS.
The evolving landscape of the property industry
The property sector is at a critical crossroads, adapting to various environmental, economic, and technological challenges. The role of surveyors is pivotal, requiring both flexibility and responsiveness to these ongoing changes. The AI in Construction 2025 report indicates a global trend where the adoption of artificial intelligence remains low; approximately 45% of organizations reported no utilization of AI technologies, with only 1% having fully integrated AI into their projects.
Surveyors’ perception of AI
Despite these statistics, optimism prevails within the surveying community. Nearly 70% of project managers and quantity surveyors believe that the integration of artificial intelligence will enhance their value delivery. This optimism is crucial; however, it is essential for the industry to unite in addressing the barriers to adoption in an ethical and responsible manner.
A framework for responsible AI use
To support this initiative, RICS has introduced its inaugural global standard for the responsible deployment of AI technologies. This standard, effective on March 9, 2026, provides a structured framework for professionals navigating the rapidly changing landscape of AI. It outlines essential requirements and best practices for RICS members and regulated firms worldwide.
This new standard aims to address the increasing integration of AI in various sectors, including valuation, construction, infrastructure, and land services, ensuring that these tools are used ethically, transparently, and under professional supervision.
