The picturesque setting of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre will soon come alive with artistic expression as the Out In The Hills festival takes place from January 16 to 18, 2026. Attendees can expect a diverse range of activities, including photography exhibitions and culinary showcases.
Star-studded lineup of talent
This year’s festival will feature an impressive lineup, including the esteemed Ian McKellen, who will perform in a staged reading of Equinox.
This one-man play is written by Laurie Slade and directed by the acclaimed Sean Mathias. Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to hear from renowned author and artist Juano Diaz, who will present excerpts from his memoir Slum Boy.
This event is set to be a groundbreaking experience, enhanced by the captivating rhythms of the celebrated solo percussionist and composer Dame Evelyn Glennie, blending spoken word with improvisational soundscapes.
New narratives take center stage
Alan Cumming will direct a new adaptation of Me and the Girls, inspired by a short story from the renowned Noel Coward. This production, featuring a cast of six skilled performers, seeks to provide a contemporary viewpoint on Coward’s themes while integrating modern issues. Additionally, former politician Mhairi Black will participate in a discussion with broadcaster Gemma Cairney, focusing on the significance of representation and visibility in contemporary society.
Unity and celebration
The Out In The Hills festival will include a special interview session with renowned chat show host Graham Norton. Norton expressed his enthusiasm about participating in this prestigious event, which holds significant meaning for him. He reflected on his initial rejection from the Pitlochry Festival Theatre nearly four decades ago, stating, “I am delighted to finally be making my debut and in such stellar company.”
The importance of solidarity
Alan Cumming highlighted that the festival serves not only as a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community but also as a crucial platform for solidarity. He remarked, “This festival is a chance for everyone to express their support and join in a weekend that honors the joy and resilience of queer culture.” This message is particularly relevant as queer and trans communities face renewed challenges.
Festival showcases diverse literary talent
The festival features appearances by acclaimed authors such as Armistead Maupin, known for his engaging Tales Of The City series, and celebrated poet Jackie Kay. The program, carefully curated by programmer Lewis Hetherington, offers a variety of inspiring and artistic events designed to appeal to a wide audience.
