The challenge of obesity and inactivity continues to be a significant concern globally, and Wales is no exception. In response, the Welsh Government has launched an innovative program known as FIT FANS. This community-focused initiative utilizes the passion for football to promote healthier lifestyles among participants, particularly those at risk of serious health issues.

Since its inception, the FIT FANS program has transformed the lives of over 1,500 individuals. The structured 12-week course, available at five different Welsh football clubs, aims to enhance both physical and mental health through a combination of exercise and nutritional education.

Program structure and outcomes

Administered by the EFL’s charitable organization, EFL in the Community, in collaboration with the Football Association of Wales, the FIT FANS program is designed to engage those who might feel hesitant about traditional healthcare avenues. By using football as a medium, the program addresses the needs of participants who may not feel comfortable seeking help from their general practitioners.

One notable aspect of the program is its results. On average, male participants have reported a weight loss of approximately 3.7 kg, while female participants have experienced an average decrease of 2.8 kg. These figures highlight the program’s effectiveness in fostering healthier lifestyles.

Success stories from participants

The success of the FIT FANS initiative is underscored by personal testimonials. Michael Kelleher, who joined the FIT JACKS program led by Swansea City AFC Foundation, shared his inspiring journey. Initially struggling with health issues such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure, he saw significant improvements during the program. By the time he completed the course, he had lost 10 kg and eliminated the need for medication, leading to a newfound passion for running.

Professor Isabel Oliver, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, praised the FIT FANS initiative, stating that it not only aids in reducing the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease but also fosters community connections. These connections contribute to enhanced social support and mental well-being.

Long-term benefits and community impact

Beyond the initial 12-week program, FIT FANS encourages participants to maintain their progress through various peer support networks. Many have formed groups via WhatsApp to keep each other motivated and accountable, ensuring that the positive changes continue long after the course ends.

Moreover, the program has shown substantial improvements in mental health, with participants reporting increased life satisfaction and reduced levels of anxiety. This holistic approach not only addresses physical health but also nurtures emotional resilience, forming well-rounded individuals.

Future directions and support

With a concerning 62% of the Welsh population classified as overweight or living with obesity, initiatives like FIT FANS are crucial for instigating lasting lifestyle changes. The Welsh Government has recognized the program’s importance and has allocated an additional £200,000 in funding, allowing for an even broader reach across Wales.

Debbie Cook, the EFL Director of Community, emphasized that enhancing the health and well-being of individuals in football communities is a top priority. The unifying power of the sport plays a vital role in bringing people together, offering a platform for support and change that extends beyond the individual.
