Discover the pressing necessity for companies in Hampshire to strengthen their cybersecurity measures in response to increasing cyber threats.

Topics covered
The landscape of modern business faces significant challenges due to the increasing threat of cybercrime. Insights from Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones emphasize the urgent need for organizations in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to strengthen their defenses.
The alarming rise in cyberattacks has been highlighted by several high-profile breaches affecting major UK companies.
During a focused event on cyber threats held at the Police Training HQ in Southampton, various stakeholders convened to discuss strategies for enhancing cybersecurity.
This initiative coincided with International Fraud Awareness Week, aiming to provide essential insights and support to local businesses grappling with the ramifications of cybercrime.
The magnitude of the cyber threat
Statistics indicate that approximately 77 businesses and charities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight report incidents of cybercrime annually.
These incidents not only disrupt operations but also result in considerable financial losses. The need to address this issue has never been more pressing, particularly in light of the severe impact of recent attacks on companies like Jaguar Land Rover and M&S.
Understanding the attack landscape
According to the South-East Cyber Resilience Centre, 14% of UK enterprises recognized the necessity for improved measures against cyber threats over the past year. Alarmingly, only 23% have established a formal plan to respond to cyber incidents. Moreover, while 85% of cyberattacks begin with phishing, only 19% of employees receive any training on these threats.
The scale of the threat is staggering, with an estimated 3.4 billion phishing emails dispatched globally each day. Although spam filters block around 45% of these emails, approximately 1.87 billion still manage to bypass defenses, posing a considerable risk to businesses.
Strategies for prevention
PCC Donna Jones stressed the importance of proactive measures for businesses to secure their operations. She noted that many cybercriminals are young, highly intelligent individuals who hack to showcase their skills. This gaming mentality necessitates that organizations remain vigilant.
Implementing effective security measures
To mitigate risks, businesses should adopt strategies such as implementing two-factor authentication and ensuring robust password policies. Inspector Chris White, Head of Cyber and Innovation at the South-East Cyber Resilience Centre, recommended that enabling two-step verification for social media and online accounts is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to bolster security.
Fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness within the organization is essential. This includes training staff to recognize and respond to threats and promoting the use of strong passphrases over simple passwords. For instance, combining three random words with numbers and symbols can significantly enhance security.
The importance of reporting incidents
Reporting cyber incidents is vital for developing a comprehensive understanding of the threat landscape. Chief Constable Alexis Boon emphasized the importance of documenting these crimes to enable effective law enforcement responses. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is equipped with a dedicated cybercrime team prepared to investigate and collaborate with regional partners.
Businesses that suspect they have fallen victim to cybercrime should take immediate action. They can report incidents by calling 101, while urgent situations necessitate a call to 999. Additionally, contacting their bank’s fraud department at 159 can help mitigate potential losses.
