The automotive industry in Northern Ireland is undergoing a notable transformation as the Agnew Group embarks on a significant initiative. This prominent dealership has been chosen to represent the Skoda brand in a groundbreaking dual-format partnership with Volkswagen. This collaboration not only marks a first within the broader Volkswagen Group network but also aligns with a strategic goal to enhance consumer engagement and operational efficiency.

Established in 1931 by the Agnew family, the dealership will function from two well-known locations on Boucher Road in Belfast and Mallusk Way in Newtownabbey. The project involves a substantial investment of £5.1 million, which is expected to create 20 new job opportunities with the launch scheduled for December 1.

Strategic response to market dynamics

This strategic decision follows a major restructuring of Volkswagen’s UK dealer network, which aims to cut costs and enhance operational efficiency. The reorganization has resulted in a notable decrease in the number of dealerships, leaving only two Skoda representatives in Northern Ireland: Agnew and Donnelly Group.

Industry insiders have characterized this shift as ‘brutal,’ underscoring the competitive challenges faced by automotive retailers.

Among the notable losses is John Mulholland Motors in Randalstown. Despite securing the prestigious UK Škoda Dealer of the Year Award three times during its 30-year association with the brand, the dealership has ceased selling Skoda vehicles.

Expanding brand representation

The addition of Skoda to Agnew Group’s portfolio

The addition of Skoda to the Agnew Group’s portfolio expands its representation to a total of eight distinguished brands. The diverse range now includes Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Porsche, Volvo, and Volkswagen. Sydney Pentland, franchise director for the Agnew Volkswagen Group, emphasized the significance of this new chapter, stating, “This marks an important step in strengthening the Volkswagen Group presence in Northern Ireland.”

The dual-dealership model

According to Pentland, the dual-dealership model aims to enhance the customer experience by merging two well-established automotive brands under one roof. This innovative approach is designed to provide a seamless transition for customers, supported by a knowledgeable and dedicated team. It also aims to foster ongoing investment and job growth in the greater Belfast area.

Developing a comprehensive service offering

Agnew Group has made several significant appointments to ensure the operational success of its dual-brand dealership. Bronagh Briggs will serve as the new car sales manager for Agnew VW Belfast, and Andrew Bridgett joins as the sales manager for Agnew Skoda Belfast. Their combined experience exceeds 30 years in sales, which will be instrumental to the team.

Moreover, a new general manager position has been established to oversee operations at Mallusk, with Marc Bunting taking on this vital role. The dealership’s layout includes a divided showroom, allowing Volkswagen vehicles to be showcased on one side and Skoda models on the other, thereby enhancing the customer visual experience.

Enhanced customer experience and service

The new dealership aims to enhance customer experience by offering improved shared facilities, with after-sales services centralized on-site. Agnew Group has been designated as the official authorized repairer for Skoda at both locations, ensuring comprehensive after-sales support that includes routine servicing and warranty work.

The Boucher Road site is particularly significant, boasting over 250 vehicle display spaces. This feature aligns with the growth ambitions of both the Volkswagen and Skoda brands. As Agnew Group moves forward with this initiative, the dual-format dealership is poised to transform automotive retail in Northern Ireland.
